Explanation: Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 7331 is often touted as an analog to our own Milky Way. About 50 million light-years distant in the northern constellation Pegasus, NGC 7331 was recognized early on as a spiral nebula and is actually one of the brighter galaxies not included in Charles Messier's famous 18th century catalog. Since the galaxy's disk is inclined to our line-of-sight, long telescopic exposures often result in an image that evokes a strong sense of depth. The effect is further enhanced in this sharp image by galaxies that lie beyond the gorgeous island universe. The background galaxies are about one tenth the apparent size of NGC 7331 and so lie roughly ten times farther away. Their close alignment on the sky with NGC 7331 occurs just by chance. Seen here through faint foreground dust clouds lingering above the plane of Milky Way, this visual grouping of galaxies is also known as the Deer Lick Group.

The mind boggles with the possibilities out there, and it don’t take much to boggle my aged mind.....
I’m with ya there.
Seeing a pic of several galazys like space toys is awesome...
Makes the mind reel in imagination...
Did you ever notice how closely analogous ST:TOS is to The Odyssey? Kirk was always involved with some strange woman, like Odysseus with Circe, and with Calypso, later in time but at the beginning of the narrative, as we learn in Book V where Odysseus is just thinking about getting back to his wife ... but I digress.
Note Odysseus has his "redshirts" too, and in fact loses his whole crew. But the point of analogy I have in mind is the Mediterranean with the Galaxy, as made most clear in the "Halloween episode", with the cat. At the end it is revealed that Kirk is dealing with Extragalactic pipecleaner creatures from "beyond the edge of the world" as it were.
So, here we are in OUR Island Universe!
:’) Interesting, I’d not noticed it. ST:Voyager was, for certain. I even sort of pitched the idea of doing a Voyager episode similar to “Plato’s Stepchildren”, but instead of the classic Greeks, the aliens would be emulating the ancient Minoans, and the aliens would have been played by the (then, four) surviving cast of Gilligan’s Island (get it — Minnow, Minoans). The late Russell Johnson thought it was a great idea but otherwise, kinda, don’t bother me kid.
Reel, or pinwheel? ;’)
nicer metaphor....
Dude, don’t bogart that joint!
