Teen self-defense expert expelled, jailed, all because of a pocketknife
Daily Caller ^ | 03/10/2014 | Robby Soave

An Ohio high school student training to be an EMT was charged with a felony and sent to jail for 13 days because police found a pocketknife during an unauthorized search of his car.

“I didn’t think anything of the Airsoft guns,” said Wiser in a statement. “Our school is a technical school, and I was planning on meeting with my Airsoft team after school. My stun gun was locked in the glove box, and the knife was in my EMT medical vest. I bought it at K-Mart and have it as part of my first responder kit for cutting seatbelts.”

The pocketknife violates the school district’s zero tolerance policy against bringing weapons onto school property — a class 5 felony.

He is worried that a conviction will destroy his chance at a career in public service. Indeed, he has already been expelled from high school and technical school, and had his participation in the U.S. Army’s Future Soldiers program terminated.

As a condition of his release from jail, he was given an ankle monitor and ordered to remove all weapons from his house. Most curiously of all, he was told to have no further contact with his grandfather, who is dying of cancer.

There are two goals of “zero tolerance”.
One is to remove any liability issues from any school staff member that would dare use his own common sense and discretion for an individual case.

The other is to “equalize discipline”. It’s unfair that the “straight arrow” kids don’t get punished as much as the “prison bound” kids.

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kinds of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of lawbreakers - and then you cash in on guilt.”

From “Atlas Shrugged,” by Ayn Rand (1957)

It’s all microwavable trays now. I bet the only knife they have in the kitchen is a box cutter.

Given the choice, other than a firearm, for something to defend myself a pocket knife would be the very low on the list. A tire iron, baseball bat, 2’ level, or shovel would all work better than a knife.

What about rocks? They could be used as weapons and probably were at one time or another. So we have to ban geology!

What about students in the Culinary Arts (cooking) program where an assortment of knives is required?

Arresting honest, normal, non-violent people and deliberately ignoring violent criminals.

This way they get the arrest numbers up without ever being in any danger.

Then they can get on TV and say they are arresting criminals.

No. They are declaring innocent people to be criminals, while willfully, intentionally, with full awareness and knowledge, leaving hardened criminals to commit their crimes.

Was that not what the 9/11 hijackers used? Seems pretty "weapon-like" to me. Arrest them all, I say.

"I bought it at K-Mart and have it as part of my first responder kit for cutting seat belts.”

I have to say...while these administrators are out of their farking minds, this kid seems bright enough to know better. If he wanted a tool to cut seat belts, there are specific tools that are designed for that. An 18 year old who has been paying attention to the kind of crap going on around this nation in the past few years...should not have had any knife on him at all when on school grounds.

I posted the name of the school, the superintendent, and the assistant county prosecutor at issue, along with such contact info was available. I'm sure we've got at least one Ohio freeper who can scare up better contact info for these bozos.

I recommend we make ourselves be heard.

It’s also a way of lowering the minority felon ratio in order to not bo investigated by the DoJ.

It reads like this is a pre trial release.

I wonder if the prosecution can get this by a jury?

“He is worried that a conviction will destroy his chance at a career in public service”

What party was he registered to? What were his goals in public service?

If I have a database with enough personal information, I can deselect potential opposition candidates before they even think of running, like how google uses predictive modeling for advertising targeting.

But if I did that, there would be cases where people say, huh? That’s over the top, insane, that response makes NO sense whatsoever.

So here's the bigger picture, from the Daily Caller article:

Jordan Wiser, an 18-year-old student at Ashtabula County Technical and Career Campus in Jefferson, Ohio, is an EMT trainee with a passion for self-defense and public service. He aspires to be a firefighter, and is a certified emergency vehicle operator. Wiser is comfortable with weapons, and posts Youtube videos of himself talking about law enforcement, self-defense and video games.

Apparently, school administrators caught wind of the videos, which led them to believe that Wiser was in possession of weapons, according to the Huffington Post.

They didn't expel and arrest him because he had a pocketknife in his car. They expelled and arrested him because they looked at his online videos and decided that he was an Undesirable. The pocketknife was just the pretext they were looking for.
