Bolton: Sending Kerry to Ukraine Talks ‘Like Sending a Cupcake to Negotiate With a Steak Knife’

Sending Secretary of State John Kerry to negotiate with his Russian counterpart in a failed bid to avert a Moscow-backed referendum in Crimea was “like sending a cupcake to negotiate with a steak knife,” former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton said on Sunday. Speaking as the referendum was underway, Bolton told Fox News that both the Obama administration and the European Union (E.U.) were demonstrating weakness in their handling of the Ukraine crisis.

Even after Kerry’s last-ditch talks with Lavrov on Saturday failed to avert the referendum, Kerry seemed reluctant to talk about sanctions. Asked during a press conference after the talks whether U.S. and E.U. sanctions would now be a fait accompli on Monday, he agreed that Obama and the E.U. “have said if the referendum takes place, there will be some sanctions” – but then added immediately, “There’ll be some response, put it that way.” Kerry referred several times during the press availability to Russia’s “legitimate concerns” and “legitimate interests” in Ukraine. “We hope President Putin will recognize that none of what we’re saying is meant as a threat. It’s not meant as a – in a personal way,” he said.

I saw this comment on FOX this morning and I just roared with laughter.

Nobody needs to be mocked more than the “haughty Kerry”.

Some suggest approving the pipeline, produce more oil and gas, and export to Europe their oil and gas needs might hurt Russia.

The USA holds no cards in this game. What is Kerry supposed to negotiate with?

Exactly... but remember when Obama took power back in 2009, he wanted the world to believe his presence on the scene would create an environment of universal peace, calm and kumbaya.... the most of America believed him.

And oh, the comeuppance since...

Reagan was exceptional. A real leader, very intelligent and thoughtful and an independent thinker. He would not have lasted a month at an Ivy League school or at CBS News.

It’s like telling a tamale to negotiate with Michelle Obama

It’s like telling a choom joint to negotiate with Barry Obama

It’s like telling the truth to negotiate with a progressive

It’s like telling a martini to negotiate with Ted Kennedy

I could go on and on...

If the US had at least looked strong and credible, this probably would never have happened

Correct. But I don’t think a President Bolton could do much of anything about this situation either.

The problem is that to the extent 0bama has a foreign policy, it is purely reactive and at least three moves behind international events. Bolton could not do anything now, nor could anyone else. Putin checkmated the world, and it was set up some time ago.

The idea is that you are supposed to foresee that Putin might try to maneuver his way into this position, and block him subtly before he can get there. That’s what real diplomacy is about. It’s not some game of electric football on a vibrating metal board with your players randomly wandering around, which is what 0bama and Kerry seem to think it is.

No doubt. Huge infrastructure would need to be built on both ends, not to mention a massive expansion of the fleet for carrying the stuff. I would assume at least several years, perhaps five or more, to make a significant impact.

Or. We could provide tech help and assistance for the Ukrainians, Poles, Germans, etc. to drill for their own shale gas, of which they have plenty. I don't think that would take much longer, and having friendly countries with their own energy supplies not subject to the dangers of sea transport is all in our national interest.

Also, not exporting gas from US will keep the price lower here. :)

True. As I said, when Reagan was in office I believed there were many in this country who were "real leaders, very intelligent and thoughtful and an independent thinker who were regular nice guys who loved freedom and America" who could, should, and would take his place. I still do and it really doesn't make sense to me that we can't more like him on a regular basis - except for one thing.

There is a spiritual battle and rulership aspect in politics and the affairs of nations. Prior to Reagan's election, our church was part of a massive, nationwide, orchestrated campaign of corporate prayer I haven't seen before or since. This coincides with the whole history of America: God created America beginning with the miracle of the Constitution and has been her Keeper ever since. If America is to survive for another period of time, it will by God's providence and mercy.
