Bracken: When The Music Stops – How America’s Cities May Explode In Violence (EBT SHTF scenario)

From Matt Bracken:

In response to recent articles in mainstream military journals discussing the use of the U.S. Army to quell insurrections on American soil, I offer an alternate vision of the future. Instead of a small town in the South as the flash point, picture instead a score of U.S. cities in the thrall of riots greater than those experienced in Los Angeles in 1965 (Watts), multiple cities in 1968 (MLK assassination), and Los Angeles again in 1992 (Rodney King). New Yorkers can imagine the 1977 blackout looting or the 1991 Crown Heights disturbance. (snip) What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but ERROR? This could also be the result of deliberate sabotage by hackers, or other technical system failures. (snip)

I have personal knowledge of the EBT system supporting 28 of the states.

Bandaids and bubblegum hold it together.

First, if something like that happens, and you are a prepper, lock yourself in the house and don't leave for any reason, even to go to work as work won't happen if there is rioting all over and killing has started. If you prepped, you don't have to go to a store where riots are happening.

I have seen instances of what happens when there is panic and stores run out of food. When Hurricane Rita was thought to go through Houston and then through my town, people from Galveston through Houston, all left at once. People died on Hwy. 10 out of Houston toward San Antonio and Hwy. 45 out of Houston and through my town and all the way to Dallas. Millions of people cannot leave at once - cars ran out of gas from being in a stopped line of cars for hours and going no where. People in cars for hours had no water or food and when gas ran out, they for sure weren't going anywhere. Don't get on the road with millions of others trying to leave your area. Where you are is safer than exposed on the road.

People tend to think “this” is so bad, another place “must” be better so they get in a car and go, then find out there is no place better than they just left and they have less provisions than they had at home. Unless you have a safe place to go, don't leave.

It takes two days for stores in a county to run out of food due to a hurricane coming and no food stuffs are coming back until trucks can refuel their tanks in that county. There are no riots in a pre-hurricane situation, but there would be in a different situation such as the EBT cards not working or power not working so NO credit cards work. Stores would be overrun and neither they nor police could stop it - don't be there.

Police can't save anyone or stop a riot if there are many more rioters than there are police - don't be there.

Prepare now to be secure in your house, have everything you need for a period of time and the amount of time is up to you.

If you are a veteran you can join Oath Keepers and become a member of a local Civilization Preservation Team.

“I was just on 45 north of Houston a couple weeks ago.”

If you went through Conroe and then to Huntsville, you saw Hwy. 45 under construction all the way to Huntsville, with long parts in narrow two lanes with concrete walls on both sides. Have to concentrate to stay in your narrow lane because drifting will take you into another car. If we have a hurricane this year, that long highway under construction will be backed up for 40 miles all the way back to Houston if millions try to get out again. I don't know if it is also under construction past Huntsville to the north.

That’s assuming the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency. If that’s changed, all bets are off. Paradigms, in such a situation, would be dangerous things.

My point is that continuing to fund EBT AFDC etc. may be the easiest thing for fedgov to do: just add fiat value to the cards. It’s the cheapest and easiest way there is ingratiate fedgov to the FSA population. If that system fails, it will probably be the very last thing to fail.

Now, as has been pointed out, these electronic payment systems are really a patchwork of federal and state computer networks that can and do fail.

A more likely scenario might be a cyber attack on the EBT systems designed to create this sort of social unrest.

Imagine a hack that doesn’t attach the EBT system directly, but that hijacks the payment terminal system. Imagine, for example, intercepting a legitimate transaction at the payment terminal, then breaking the payment request up into one cent increments sent sequentially to the government side processing system. Imagine doing that for all transactions processed at WalMart in a 10 minute period. That would look like a DDOS attack, but it would probably not trigger the system’s EBT fraud detection safeguards.

Carjackings and home invasions will proliferate madly.

Should that prediction come to pass, there will be a large pile of MUYs in my yard that the LEOs should feel free to dispose of.

"The wealthy, powerful and politically well-connected will demand the lion’s share of remaining police resources..."

Interesting. Now what are these wealthy, powerful and politically connect aholes gonna do when the LEOs simply say, 'No'.

Great article but the tables eventually turn on the rioters only when they leave `da hood’ & sally forth to invade white neighborhoods (transport?) where “there will be a rifle behind every venetian blind”, to paraphrase Adm. Yamamoto.

It was in 1992 when rappette Sister Souljah counseled black rioters in L.A. to quite burning their own ‘hoods and attack whites in the suburbs. There weren’t any takers IIRC because the rioters had already experienced armed Korean store owners.

MUYs in the open would be rather vulnerable in an environment where every freestanding house has been turned into a darkened fortress where gunfire can erupt from any window.

Yes and they will increase welfare payments to cover inflation and the working stiff takes it in the neck again.

The Cincy Riots of 2001, which Fred covers there, were well-covered here at Free Republic. That was the event that really, really finally woke me up to how morally bankrupt the Court Media in this country really is.

Unfortunately, there was no national awakening as to the real situation, and 5 months later, 9/11 happened and sucked all the life from the Cincy story.

I actually listened to police monitors during the cincy riots supplied here and was commenting and reading comments on the threads as it happened.

Local Law Enforcement isn’t clueless in my area. They just don’t intend to respond in any fashion. Most all will be outa town at the first hint of trouble.

A week of this, and I envision some very well organized and armed anti Flash-Mob groups coming together.

Why wait until then to get organized? Get your Marching Club and your Shooting Club organized now, with lots of membership overlap.

I expect that inflation will come to this.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six poundsc of barley for a day’s wages Revelation 6:5,6

Love this paragraph:
“Most of us wish we could turn back the calendar to Norman Rockwell’s America. But we cannot, for that America is water long over the dam and gone from our sight, if not from our memories. John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” If that is true, judging by current and even accelerating cultural shifts, we might already have passed the point of no return.

The prudent American will trim his sails accordingly.”

I think by that he means the prudent “American” will have an exit plan.
