Study: Nagging Kills!
Pajamas Media ^ | 05/10/2014 | Dr. Helen Smith

I saw this headline at Drudge and immediately went over to check titled “Study: Nagging By A Spouse Could Shorten Your Life”:

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It is a part of marriage that everyone loathes – the occasional or, in some cases, constant nagging between spouses.

And as CBS 2’s Scott Rapoport reported Friday, word has now come that nagging is not only annoying, but can even be life-threatening.

Ask any married guy on the planet and he’ll tell you, as one man told CBS 2, nagging is “not pleasant.”

But now a new study suggests husbands of nagging wives can actually be nagged to death.

Danish researchers from the University of Copenhagen said having a nagging partner can significantly shorten one’s life, and could result in three extra deaths per 100 people per year.

The study also said people nagged by their spouses are more likely to get heart disease and cancer.

“Sounds about right,” said Stephanie Cellitti. “I nag him a lot.”

The study also says men in particular are at risk.

I truly believe this, having counseled and talked to many men over the years who have been nagged and harassed by their spouse, some to the point of severe depression and heart disease. I can always tell if a man’s relationship is going poorly by how many times a wife or girlfriend calls him on the phone to tell him to do something or ask where he is. Naturally, if a man does this to a woman, it is abuse. Society doesn’t care if a woman nags and hassles a guy 24/7. Even the unempathetic women in the article mentioned that they weren’t going to stop. So, it’s up to men to protect themselves, at least until changes can be made, if ever.

My advice for those men not already married wondering if she would make a good wife? If she calls or texts multiple times a day to ask you to do something or asks what you are doing, she is probably going to continue this negative behavior. Take this as a sign that something many be wrong with the relationship and do not get too involved. It is not worth your health and certainly not your life.

What are other forms of nagging that you have witnessed that you feel are negative influences on men’s health?

Maybe she does more without being asked? You withhold more and she plays the game with you by pushing you for it?

Pretty darned hard to judge a marriage across the ether.

I'm surrounded by examples of being told what to do. It is RARE for me to tell her what to do... What gives with this?

I hear ya. Its almost never the other way around.

Not long ago I called home to ask my wife to buy some butterfly bandages. I didn't tell her, but I had split my forehead surfing and was on my way home. Got home, no bandages so I ended up getting them myself.

I wasn't raised a spoiled child, luckily.

Mrs. NHD never nags me. She does remind me from time to time about things I’ve committed to do.

Hi Hon!!!

men historically had FAR greater lifespans than women.

If you have ever done any geneology research you would see it clearly, where one guy outlives two or three wives and has multiple children with each one. (of course the constant childbirth are the primary reason the women were dying)

Thank you, Johnny...that’s perfect. Complaining is what people do who lack the fortitude to take action. So if your wife’s nagging you to death, either leave or throw her s**t out in the driveway. If you can’t bring yourself to do this, invest in a really good set of earplugs. It will annoy her to no end.

It’s very difficult to promise unconditional love with all of that damned nagging! Doesn’t she know that having a double standard cancels out the Golden Rule?

One of my ancestors, a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, had 21 children by 3 wives--the youngest child was about 5 years old when he died at the age of 78. 18 of his children were alive at his death--a very good ratio for those days.

My great-grandfather was married three times--had 7 children by my great-grandmother, who died of cancer at the age of 41. He divorced the last wife--not sure if the second marriage ended with death or divorce. He told his sons, "Only get married one time."

Samuel Johnson knew of a man who had a long and unhappy marriage. Soon after his wife's death, the man married again. Johnson's comment was that that was the triumph of hope over experience.

"...constant nagging between spouses..."

Call me sexist but almost all the nagging I have ever witness is a wife nagging a husband.

"The bible teaches men to be the head of their households and wives obey their husbands"

No. It does not. This is a view Muslims have. It says wives submit to your husbands. It says children obey your parents. Big difference. There IS a hierarchy with men as head of the household and men are to lay down their lives for their wives as Christ did for the Church. Wives are to submit to and respect their husbands. Look it up.

And if someone is going to quote the Old Testament with Sarah and Abraham - remember - the Bible states the truthfulness of many things that happened, right or wrong - but that's different to where it states what God wants or commands.
