McDonald's hires 7,000 touch-screen cashiers

The touch screens will only accept debit or credit cards, adding to the slow death knell of cash and coins. This all goes along with an overall revamp of McDonald's restaurants worldwide aimed at projecting a modern image as opposed to the old-fashioned golden arches with a slightly creepy (to my taste anyway) clown guy hanging around the french fries.

Dispensers with sanitation tissues are in order, no doubt. I always grab on and wipe down the buggy handle bar as I enter the store.

In fact, I mentioned it to my doc and he said it's a good move to dab it around the base of your nose first, too.

When these machines are installed, the average “per customer” spend increases dramatically. When people use Plastic instead of Cash, they are less cognizant of the actual amount they are spending.

I also keep the combination baby seat/feces collector closed on shopping carts.

I can see where eventually the process (other than logistics of loading the meat) is fully automated.

Uniformity of deli meat packaging would be the key, I imagine.

Here in the Philly area, our Wawa convenience stores have these touch screens at their deli counters. You still have to pay at the register, but ordering a hoagie or a breakfast sandwich is a piece of cake. It'd be easy enough for Wawa to add a credit card pay to their touch screens but I suspect they do a slightly better business by making customers walk over to the register. I always add a soda and a bag of chips. Lots of folks add those things and candy or cigarettes.

In my opinion, the touch screen change is long overdue in fast food.

“So much for putting loose change into the box to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.”

Nah! The machine will ask you if you want to donate $1 to $5 to some liberal health enterprise before you sign the screen or press ok.

Safeway, Walmart, Target, and many other stores have this option programmed into their card readers.

“I would just like for them to get one order correct the first time”

Maybe it’s different here. The McDonalds I go into; always do things very well.
It’s popular to beat up on the workers at times; but they seem very hard working and do a good job.
It’s been years since I had a order that was incorrect there.

“This will fail because too many of McDonalds’ customers are too STOOOOOPID to use them.”

That’s a stoooooooopid statement.

I took my kids to McDonald’s. I took my grandkids to McDonald’s. I am not stupid.

prediction: This will fail because too many of McDonalds’ customers are too STOOOOOPID to use them.

It will work, because they'll probably have pictures. Seriously, convenient store WAWA went this way at the deli counter and it works great. Orders are usually 100% correct; wait times are significantly reduced; and labor costs are greatly reduced.

Funny enough, the McDs on my grad school campus had an ordering kiosk as part of a trial over 10 years ago. Worked fine.

I expect that Libs/Progs here in the US will scream bloody murder over the unfairness of it. But will immediately stop once McDs agrees to have the kiosks also dispense voter registration cards.

“As of now, it’s fine that we have a choice of spending cash, or using debit/credit cards. To me, it’s a big step to get to where debit/credit cards are required, and cash not accepted.”

About 20 years ago, I started hating carrying cash and coins around. So I used credit cards wherever and when I could.

This past year we have had two credit cards hacked, and two replaced due to Target’s problems and another national store. I never had a credit card hacked/#’s stolen until 5 years ago. I have been using credit cards since I was 21, and I’m in my mid 70’s now. So basically, I never had a problem until I turned 70 or 50 years of use. I have averaged being subjected to credit card fraud about once a year in the past 5 years, and we are very careful in our use of credit cards.

My wife has been mainly a cash person unless she buys something where the credit card has warranty protection or she could call the credit card people to cancel a payment if the product had problems. She is still there using cash.

I’m seriously thinking about buying a Visa card with a limit of a few hundred dollars and using it for my weekly purchases and recharging it when it gets down.

Your concerns re big brother monitoring us become more realistic for all of us each day. I hadn’t thought about Big Sis monitoring our restaurant charges for ordering what she calls bad food.

“This will fail because too many of McDonalds’ customers are too STOOOOOPID to use them.”

Many fast food restaurants in Californicator land now accept EBT cards, and the permanently poor/aka rat voters have zero problems using them.
