FULL TITLE: Don't get caught with your pants down: Tennessee city creates ordinance that makes wearing saggy pants illegal

Standards - and pants - have been slipping in the Tennessee city of Pikeville, where the mayor has decided things have gotten as low as they can go.

Mayor Phil Cagle is the author of an ordinance that will soon see anyone wearing their pants 'more than three inches below the top of the hips' fined for public indecency.

Pikeville is just the latest place in the U.S. to take issue with where young men position their trousers.

It’s a sad commentary that we need laws to spell this out.

But, I have seen one too many people with these baggy pants. It’s both guys and girls who wear these pants, not restricted to certain ethnic groups either.

And then they are in front of you, they bend over, and you get to see the great divide. Not a pretty sight. But, they want to expose themselves. It’s good to clarify exactly what is indecent in public, since people can’t police themselves in this area.

A simpler solution is simply including exposure of one’s undergarments in the “indecent exposure” ordinance.

I like the sound of that.... I would even go as far as not allowing boys/men to wear ear rings or pony tails.

Might consider a exception for Pirates and Indians

It’s about time government bureaucrats got into the business of controlling the clothes that people must wear.

The nice thing about the baggie pants is it makes it harder for them to run from the scene of the crime.

They'll be citing a lot more teenage girls than baggy-pant wearing boys.

“Will be overturned as unConstitutionally racissss”

This type of ordinance simply can’t be enforced. It reminds me of attempts to outlaw obscenity. One judge said, “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.” But that standard repeatedly failed in higher court tests.

There was a time when it was illegal for women to show their knees. As much as I’d like to see people dress better, there is no way to legislate it.

What has to happen is the fashion trend setters need to dress better. When that happens the world’s followers will also dress better.

What they don’t seem to realize is how the way they dress affects how people see and treat them. I always wear a long-sleeved shirt and slacks. Clerks and just people I meet treat me wonderfully well and I respond with eye contact and a smile. It makes life much easier.

Excellent points ... and this is what should be required of teachers and what should be taught to students (too many teachers look too much like students, so how can they expect to be respected by the students?)

IMO that would just result in lots of people not bothering to wear underwear. Pants would still hang down and it would be worse than it is now.

One thing that I have discovered over the years is that you have to be very, very specific with people or you get a lot of “Well, why didn’t you say that in the first place” comments. There is no accounting for taste, class or common sense.
