A man was killed by a mob Monday in Koudougou, a town in central Burkina Faso, after being accused of making another mans penis disappear. It was not an isolated incident: there has been an increase in the number of these strange accusations being made in recent weeks.
This lynching took place in the 10th district of Koudougou, in the citys west. It all started with a fight at a restaurant between two men: one accused the other of having cast a spell on him simply by touching him. The first man, a local mechanic, claimed that his penis had been "stolen by the second man, who was not from the district. The first man called the police. But by then, a crowd had gathered around them. Incensed, the residents decided to lynch the man in the middle of the street.
"The police did all they could, but there were not enough of them to control the crowds anger" Cyrille Zoma is a reporter for Observateur Paalga in Burkina Faso.
The first genital disappearance case in Koudougou [during the last decade] was on May 2. Since then, I have counted a dozen similar cases in the city. Its always the same story: someone complains about being approached and touched by a stranger, someone not from the neighbourhood. Immediately, the alleged victims complain of lower stomach pains, tremors, and say they cant feel their genitals anymore. This only happens with men, and I have been told of it happening in several different parts of town.
On Sunday, there was an incident in which the police had to save an accused man from being lynched. Upset residents went to Koudougous central police station, where the man they accused was being kept for protection. Over the next few days, many people said that these penis thieves should be killed in order to discourage other alleged thieves. And thats what happened on Monday. The police did all they could, but there were not enough of them to control the crowds anger. Later, when medical staff examined the alleged victims of penis thieves [including the one from Monday], they couldnt find anything wrong with them.
A lot of people at the scene on Monday told me the alleged penis snatcher was a foreigner: some say he was Congolese, others say he was Rwandan or Burundian. Without any explanation, people blame a foreigner. It turns out that this person was a Burundian marabout [Muslim holy man] from Koudougous 8th district.
Con artists often say theyve stolen someones genitals in order to sell them a miracle product Yameogo Baggio, who lives in Koudougou, knows the problem well. As a representative for a French NGO, he has been studying this phenomenon for several years.
Often, con artists take advantage of peoples gullibility and scam them. There are usually two or three accomplices who carry out this scam in three parts: first, someone who claims to have magical powers touches a victim and persuades him that theyve stolen his genitals. Then, another accomplice approaches the victim and drives home the point by saying that if the victim doesnt buy a specific product, hell lose his ability to reproduce. Finally, the victim pays a hefty sum [Editors note: around 30,000 CFA Francs, or 45 euros] for a Viagra-like medicine that is supposed to make his genitals work again.
It had been several years since I had heard of any such cases in Koudougou. There were a few isolated cases in nearby areas about 10 years ago, but they quickly stopped. This time, though, the first cases in the beginning of May were handled very badly: local authorities didnt intervene immediately to calm the crowds, and a lot of people were caught up in the hysteria. I dont think the lynching of this man has calmed tensions.
Koudougous deputy mayor, Gaston Kagambega, told FRANCE 24 he had gathered local leaders to call for calm. The mayor has also set up a crisis cell at Koudougous medical centre to meet with people who say theyve been victims of penis thieves.
The accusations of penis snatching are nothing new, and they dont just happen in Burkina Faso: several cases have been alleged over the past 15 years, from Abidjan to Accra. Experts who have studied the question say that such rumours have led to nearly 300 deaths and more than 3,000 injuries in West Africa alone.
Um, I hate to state the obvious, but, I think the victims should KNOW whether the “theft” had taken place. It’s kind of easy to check.
I am betting the first American case of penis theft will occur in Caliloona most likely San Fran.
‘Twas nothing a little blue pill couldn’t have fixed.
And yet our gov’t would love to import more of these animals and unleash them upon us! Gotta love their benevolence!

Supposedly a theft of the utility of said genitals vs. the genitals themselves.
Apparently, they "lose feeling" in their genitals.
Thanks so much for this post. I don’t want to be uninformed.
Nuke the site from orbit... it’s the only way to be sure
From the Government's point of view, at least they are not Southern Baptists or Amish Mennonites. The Democrat politicians will tell them if you don't vote Democrat, your wang will rot off. But if they did not vote Democrat in the first place, they would not be over here.
Is a travel advisory needed for Western Africa? This would be about the level of competence one could expect from our State Department.
Think of the number of pr**ks we could eliminate from Washington if we had a spell like that.
Has Boehner recently visited Burkina Faso?
Were the mobs’ ancestors from Salem?
There have been reports of a Kenyan in Washington DC with the eerie power to make the spines of the Republican Leadership vanish. I wonder if there’s any connection?
Funny how in a third world country people are outraged at a guy making another mans penis disappear but in our own white house the first lady goes unpunished! Where is the justice!?
The “cultural” setting would be more likely Memphis, Jackson, Atlanta, DC or Deetroit.
And to think we got these people running the USA!!!
Where is Burkina Fiasco?
When the guy checks and finds he just lost his penis behind the couch cushion, he is going to be really embarassed.
You mean "dickless" people?
Nowhere in the United States.
According to the CIA: Muslim 60.5%, Catholic 19%, animist 15.3%, Protestant 4.2%, other 0.6%, none 0.4% (2006 est.)
Keep these guys away from long rides on a bicycle.
Gives new meaning to "reach out and touch someone," doesn't it?
Koro is a culture-specific syndrome in which an individual has an overpowering belief that his or her genitals (e.g., penis or female nipples) are retracting and will disappear, despite the lack of any true longstanding changes to the genitals.
Koro is also known as shrinking penis, and it is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
The syndrome occurs worldwide, and mass hysteria of genital-shrinkage anxiety has a history in Africa, Asia, and Europe. In the United States and Europe, the syndrome is commonly known as genital retraction syndrome.
The condition can be diagnosed through psychological assessment along with physical examination to rule out genuine disorders of the genitalia that could be causing true retraction.
I’ve lived 56 years and have never heear of Koro.
Koro. THIS is why I’m a Freeper. I learn something new and relevant every day.
I think I’ve mentioned this before. One day I was driving home from work. I was stopped at a red light while the station was playing “Detachable Penis”. And as I was still waiting at the light, what should go trundling through the intersection but...a Snap-on Tools truck.
Or he might find it on a blanket next to a broken toaster oven...
Koro is well known to doctors who have worked in southern Asia and Africa. (Not to be confused with Kuru, which is the equivalent of human Mad Cow disease, and almost exclusively afflicts cannibals.)
One classical tale of Koro was from an American doctor in China. One of the important men in a town, with a large family, had developed the syndrome, which was so intense that he demanded that family members hold on to his penis while he slept, to prevent it from disappearing. During the day, of course, he clutched on to it with his own hand.
The day before he left the town, the doctor prescribed him a potent sexual stimulant of the time, almost guaranteed to give him a profound erection. The next day, leaving the town, the man’s grateful family came out with a procession carrying baskets of fruits and vegetables, out of gratitude for being relieved of their onerous duty.
This is wrong on quite a few levels....
This would be a tough nut to crack, for sure...
“...along with physical examination to rule out genuine disorders of the genitalia that could be causing true retraction.”
Oh, great. One more thing to be worried about.
I prefer the censored version - it makes you use your imagination. A rubber you-know-what, OTOH, will never look like anything other than a rubber you-know-what.
This is what happens after 100 years of “brain drain”. The smart ones have been leaving since the industrial revolution took hold.
OMG Martin! I stare each time, hoping that -this- time the girl will emerge. Over and over. And over. And each time I’m grossed out.
I wouldn’t worry about it, since the odds are pretty low, say one in five or so.
That too. And that explains why the rest of the world sees USA as “metro-sissy”, especially Pooty Putin.
When I was in college in the mid 70’s, we had several Nigerians in the dorm. One of them threatened to steal another guy’s penis with a charm.
