Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress’ struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.

The plan offered by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4-cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4-cents-a-gallon diesel tax by 12 cents each over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation.

The plan also calls for offsetting the tax increases with other taxes cuts. …

That was one time when the “run a third party to bleed Republican votes” backfired.

I think old gas tax John carved out from both sides.

I just looked on Wikipedia.

He's still alive, age 92.

I could never figure out what he stood for, except trying to sabotage Reagan of course.

I went through the same routine in 1964, when Mitt Romney's father and Nelson Rockefeller tried to blow up Goldwater.

He had a Ross Perot kind of persona - he was going to “take charge” from the first day, and “change things.”

Why should gas taxes be used to pay for transit systems?

They shouldn’t, but it wouldn’t matter if they weren’t. The highway trust fund is as much of a Ponzi scheme as social security and the rest of them. Transit systems ought to be deregulated so that the private sector can run them again.

Our fascist female Governor here in soviet Red Hampshire just raised our gas tax four cents, effective July 1st.

Which Republican "leadership" will bargain away in the name of "bipartisanship". Clearly Corker is not running for re-election.

The GOP sure deserves its reputation as the stupid party. First, PA Governor raises gas tax in an election year, after promising not to raise taxes (read my lips, anyone?), and is getting a whooping in the polls. Now Corker is proposing a federal increase. Aren’t we paying enough for gas?

If these politicians have the outlook of Europeans, they aren’t worried about what we’re paying for gas; their attitude is probably “oh, the Europeans paid $4/gallon for gas for decades, and now the Europeans are up to $7/$8 while drivers in the US still pay less than $4” and they think their constituents ought to be happy with their lot while they push more European-style socialism on us. Of course, they don’t mention that most countries in Europe have the retail gasoline price at about 57 to 70 percent of the total pump price.
