Air India's flight attendants 'too fat to fly'
UK Telegraph ^ | September 14, 2015 | Hugh Morris

Air India last year warned 600 of its 3,500 cabin crew to lose weight within six months or risk being taken off flights and given a job on the ground. The airline now plans to remove about 130 from cabin crew duty because their body mass index (BMI) levels remain above the prescribed limit. A BMI is a measure of body fat based on a person’s height and weight.

The good old days of glamorous and yes expensive air travel. Miss out on that era. There is a reason Emirates had become a giant in int'l travel...

Guess that is a more polite way of saying they are too ugly to fly.

...

More weight also means more fuel and more wear and tear on the aircraft.

Yup, that was my first thought. Figure an extra 100 lbs total on an "overweight" crew, times how many 100's of thousands of miles they fly a year? It would add up, I'd think.

BMI is a crock of shit. Even the inventor of it admitted that it was not an exact measure of anything. It’s sad that employers use it for anything. My employer offers employees discounts on their health insurance premiums if they meet certain criteria.

Every year I meet 6 out of 7 but consistently can’t get under their 26% BMI number despite a medically-certified body composition test certifying I’m at 23%. They only weigh us and measure our height and use the garbage graph that shows I’m at 31% despite being 6’2” with a 1-rep bench max of 315 and run a 6 minute mile.

Muscle is more dense and thus heavier than fat. These charts don’t account for that or bone density.

Can’t say anything about an Air India stewardess, that’s a sacred cow...

Indeed. . .most of the world is not restrained from dismissing those that do not project an attractive image.

I fly frequently. I’ve seen gawd-awful “flight attendants” on US-based airlines. Have not seen anything less than a 9 on Singapore or Emirates. And they are NICE, too.

On American Airlines it is the norm to encounter fat and rude flight attendants. One I saw was so fat she literally had to turn sideways to “walk” (waddle) down the aisle (B737).

Even saw a pre-op tranny working as a “stewardess” one one flight. . .yuck.

Another was too short to reach into the over-head bins (nice violation of safety regulations).

In all cases, they were surly and rude and acted like you were an interruption in their day.

Their rudeness can be attributed to becoming a stewardess many-many years ago with the hope of snagging a pilot, then after decades of being used by said pilots, they are no longer catching a pilots’ eye and their feet hurt and they are unionized and stay when the younger, more eager and nicer stewardesses are let go. . .so they take it out on the passengers. (Of course, passengers bring a lot of this down on themselves).

Bring back the day of beautiful stewardesses (not “cabin crew” or “flight attendant). It would do wonders in making (almost) tolerable the outrages inflicted by TSA.

My husband is almost 6’4”; the BMI chart for him is really not on target. (He’s been at the weight shown on there; and at that weight he looked like a scarecrow.) - For me; however, the women’s BMI chart is probably pretty close to correct. I also am over that “ideal” weight. - I’m in my 70th year and am gonna eat what I want within reason.

I had a Miata at one time when I was single and the running joke and reality was that I couldn’t go out with anyone oversized as they couldn’t fit in the car.

Airlines in the US are not able to discriminate based on weight. It would bring lawsuits and the bad PR would be the death of an airline.

The lifestyle of eating out and eating on the run half the week is not conducive to keeping a thin figure.

I am married to a flight attendant but she is 5’5” and 115 lbs. She also brings most of her food with her.
