Nagem: My Sweet, Wild Carolina Dog (AKA American Dingo Alert)
News Observer ^ | 03/18/2016 | Sarah Nagem

The folks at the shelter said Lucy The Dog was a terrier/hound mix, but I figured that was just a guess. I thought she resembled a moose, with her long skinny legs and barrel-shaped chest, so I added “The Dog” to her name – you know, to clear up any confusion.

A technician at the veterinarian’s office called her an LBD, short for “little brown dog.”

I later started dating a man (he’s now my husband) who presented a new theory:

Lucy is a Carolina Dog – a free-spirited mascot of the Southeast, a gentle but suspicious soul with kibble stuck to her whiskers.

Growing up in West Virginia, I had never heard of such a dog. But some research revealed Lucy has many Carolina Dog traits: fish-hook tail, small waist, long neck, almond-shaped eyes, tiny paws. She’s the right size and color, too – light brown and about 40 pounds.

My boy Sturgis, described as a GSD mix, turned out to be a ginger-red tan buff American Dingo. From a profile view at a trot, he looks like an Australian Dingo! Sure enough, the fish-hook tail, almond-shaped brown eyes with the characteristic eyeliner, wedge-shaped head and barrel-shaped body gave the game away. He's a gentle, people-loving soul who adores me and loves every one he meets. Great little dog!

I thought Carolina Dogs were yellow — not brown. Certainly the one in the picture is yellow. I’m headed to S. Carolina next month for a short visit. Perhaps I’ll find one!

My son, who lives these, says they’re really nice dogs.

If you visit Dr. Don Anderson in Lynches River, you can even pick up a rare piebald American Dingo.

They come in all colors but red ginger, tan and yellow are most common. Black and white are rarer.

They’re often mistaken for a small GSD by people who don’t know better.

AD/CD are sweet, small dogs with none of the typical wet dog smell. They’re just plain cute and a fun dog and get along well with other pets.

A few long walks a day make them happy and they like nothing better than to crash right next to you in your bed at night.

Just a wonderful, clean companion!

An Australian Dingo can’t be exported abroad except to zoos and licensed scientific institutions.

Stupid Australian policy. The Dingo though is the base breed for the Australian Cattle Dog AKA Heeler and Australian Kelpie.

Our dog Cate, is a Black Mouth Cur. She looks just like the Carolina dog but she is bigger and has a black (now gray) snout and some black markings around her eyes. The BMCur is a farm and ranch dog and I have always thought that they were kin to the CDogs.

The one in the last photo looks like my boy.

Its amusing how they’re often mislabeled some other breed mix.

Beautiful dogs. My Cate is different but similar. She is bigger and has hound dog ears and a dark mussel.

Who is the man in the picture and where is he, does he raise those dogs for Sale? I might want one one day.

I don't know. It's just a picture I stole from this thread.
