Once unthinkable in US, drug shoot-up rooms get serious look

Across the United States, heroin users have died in alleys behind convenience stores, on city sidewalks and in the bathrooms of fast-food joints — because no one was around to save them when they overdosed.

An alarming 47,000 American overdose deaths in 2014 — 60 percent from heroin and related painkillers like fentanyl — has pushed elected leaders from coast to coast to consider what was once unthinkable: government-sanctioned sites where users can shoot up under the supervision of a doctor or nurse who can administer an antidote if necessary.

“Things are getting out of control. We have to find things we can do for people who are addicted now,” said New York state Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, who is working on legislation to allow supervised injection sites that would also include space for treatment services. “The idea shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand. I don't see anyone else coming up with anything new and innovative.” …

Hey! I have a silly idea. They should have these rooms, and secretly hire actors to simulate overdoses. It would probably do more than all of the soft therapies they’ve tried put together

Of course, once the cat was out of the bag that actors were used, the jig would be up.

Meanwhile, back in the all-too-real world of politics, Democratic trolls and agents provacateur are considered legitimate progresive tactics.

The loonies that run Seattle have been blathering about creating safe places for junkies to shoot up - and want the taxpayers to foot the bill, of course. Bizarro world indeed.

How about this. Everyone gets one free ambulance ride and treatment at their local hospital for illegal drug related issues. After that, they’re on their own. No reason the taxpayer should have to fork over $200k or more to fix their gunshot wounds, burns, or anything else that happens to them.

They blow themselves up cooking meth, oh effin’ well.
They get shot slinging dope, sorry my friend. Find yourself a ghetto doctor to fix you for free.
Stick a needle in your arm and start doing the funky chicken, hope you told your momma you loved her.

Cool! And with the new federal initiatives he is pushing through to "diversify" our (read safe) neighborhoods, we can all have one in our neighborhood~

That way when little Billy starts riding the horse, he can just walk over to the shooting house.

Then, we also have the rehab/halfway houses in the 'hoods too. We just got one on ours a few months ago. Billy won't have far to go at all.

Single user bathrooms would be great for this*. And take care of that whole "what bathroom to use?" problem. Just put a timer on the door. ("if you're not out in x minutes, the door's opening anyway.")

*I prefer them anyway. Got reasons.

The important issue is if they will have trans-friendly restrooms.

I’ll go ya a step farther. Why not take some closed military bases, equip them with drug and condom dispensaries, cafeterias, open bars, TV and videogame rooms, and for the 15-25% of the population that has not the slightest aspiration over and above getting out of bed in the morning and then getting high and then just hanging out on a couch all day, these folks could be removed from society and supervised by a modest staff. There would be a small collection of rules and exit and ejection conditions. The cost savings would be phenomenal over what society has to cope with dealing with its various miscreants.

Drug use is a personal problem that becomes society’s problem.

An innocent unborn child has a right to life.

Harder to reconcile the life of someone intent on self destructing.

Tough call

to me its all like Anna Nicole Simpson and Amy Winehouse.....

these are people deliberately heading off the rails and there is no stopping them....I say let them have their way....

but to protect them in a safe house is the absolute definition of insanity....

Some 20 years ago, a dear friend of mine suggested a Pharmaceutical Camp; same idea. You want to be a serious druggie-—we’ll set up a Camp Paradise for you, separate from the normal life you’re withdrawding from.

You’re not him, by any chance?

Sounds like a program to enable and therefore encourage drug addiction.
I am in favor of spending more on rehab, but not this. We need to get them off the streets.

I second that. Some variation on it seems inevitable.

Rehab has a 5% success rate. Too often it is coerced by a judge. Old military barracks? Sounds like a winner.
