Advice from cops: Don’t talk to cops
Learn Liberty ^ | January 31, 2017 | James Duane

Almost every time I speak at a college or law school campus, there are one or two audience members whose mother or father is a police officer or a prosecutor. I always ask them: What did your parents tell you about dealing with the police?

Every one of them, without exception, has told me the same thing: My parents in law enforcement taught me years ago that I should never talk to the police, or agree to let them interview me about anything, or let them search my car or my apartment or my backpack without a warrant.

You need to stop for a minute, and let that sink in.

I never thought about this before but it makes sense. I love cops but you never know.

EVEN if you have nothing to hide, LAWYER UP. Let them talk for you.

Better safe than sorry.

Police Officer: I would like to ask you some questions.

You: That’s nice.

Never, ever ever (ever, ever, ever) answer their questions without your lawyer present. Never!

If you can make a cop laugh, you’ll get away with it.

From watching ‘Live PD’ on A&E Friday nights...

I came here to post that. I watch it at least once a year. Both halves are great. I love the perspective the cop brings into it.

The part that is most poignant: The cops can’t “missremember” what you said if you didn’t say anything.

All over this country, prison cells are filled with innocent people falsely convicted for crimes they did not commit, and many of them will spend the rest of their lives regretting the day they agreed to talk to the police.

No hyperbole there, no agenda either, I'm sure.

Something that has always amused me is when the cop says (on various TV shows”):

Mind if I look in your vehicle?

then the answer is usually “yeah”

then they go ahead and search. I would get that thrown out so fast... “yeah, I mind” means “NO SEARCH”... well, in my understanding of the English language anyway

I agree. If someone steals your car, don’t call the cops
If you observe an adult trying to pull a kid into a car, but you are too far away to ever help, don’t call the cops
If the cops ask you if you have seen anyone strange in the area because a sweet old lady down the block just got mugged and raped, don’t talk to cops
If you are hurt in a traffic accident, no need to call the cops, drive yourself and your broken arm to the hospital.
If your kid stops breathing, don’t call the cops
If your kid tells you about a car that followed her home from school, don’t call the cops.

Actually, no, there is no hyperbole there. And even if there is, when it is YOUR future we’re talking about, just a few cases are enough to put the fear of God into you about this.

I like what an attorney quoted by Fred Reed said: “If you ever enter a courtroom as a defendant in a criminal case, your true guilt or innocence will have very little to do with the actual verdict.”

I personally have, in my possession, a police report in which the officer in question made up my ‘admission’ out of whole cloth.
