Terminator-like robots closer to reality with synthetic muscle that can lift 1,000 times own weight

The idea of lifelike robots has moved a step closer to reality with scientists developing a new type of synthetic soft muscle capable of lifting 1,000 times its own weight.

The rubber-like synthetic muscle that expands and contracts very much like its biological counterpart have been manufactured using a 3D printing technique. Heated by a small electric current, the material was capable of expanding up to nine times its normal size.

The synthetic soft muscle doesn’t need an external compressor or high-voltage equipment like the previous models, and can push, pull, bend and twist, as well as lift weight.

The material used has a strain density that is 15 times larger than natural muscle.

Really?

>>”This is a big piece of the puzzle and, like biology, the new actuator can be shaped and reshaped a thousand ways. We have overcome one of the final barriers to making lifelike robots,” Lipson added.

Sounds like science fiction...the article-picture looks like two frames from an old b movie...a skeleton with a bicep-balloon? Either its pure fiction or they just want to tease their readers or maybe they’re hiding something?

I’m going to need better evidence than that...

Researchers, in order to achieve an actuator with high strain and high stress coupled with low density, used a silicone rubber matrix with ethanol distributed throughout in micro-bubbles.

Does the "ethanol distributed throughout in micro-bubbles" leak out if the material is pierced? Because: "If it bleeds, we can kill it."

Bender on a bender? For that matter, what is the twitch speed for the muscle? May have strength, but can it dance?

Being capable of expansion up to 900 per cent when electrically heated to 80 degree Celsius via computer controls, the autonomous unit is capable of performing motion tasks in almost any design, researchers said.

That is quite a bit of heat (169 degrees F).

An important detail omitted is recovery. How long does it take for the ‘muscle’ to return to its relaxed size? Does the muscle require a cooling system?

This may be an important breakthrough but I can’t judge with the meager info here.

All his businesses are running at a loss, so, no.

SpaceX does the same jobs cheaper than ULA. SpaceX is cheaper per pound to orbit than any launch system in the world, including the Chinese. The Falcon 9/Merlin 1D cost a bit more than a billion to develop, meaning it’s been a huge bargain. As the block five version full thrust comes online, the reusability will improve, as will turnaround times.

Also, in late November (probably) the Falcon Heavy will either head to orbit or become the best fireworks show in many years. If a success, the first paying customer for the FH will be launched early in 2018. The FH will (assuming it works) have more than twice the payload capacity of the Delta IV Heavy, and cost about one-third as much.

By contrast, Washington Post’s owner and Amazon jillionaire liberal Jeff Bezos rolled over and moved his Blue Origin rocket engine manufacturing to Alabama — and he’s never orbited anything, or launched any payloads.

Myomer, I want my Mech now.
I'll take a Timberwolf or a Mad Cat rigged as a Clan energy ride.
Dual PPC's with Medium ER Lasers and extra heatsinks.
Cut back on top speed and Armor it maxed out.
Delete the jump jets.
There's a reason they call infantry crunchies.
