Physicists explain fireballs erupting from grapes in microwave oven
Phys.org ^ | 19 Feb 2018 | Bob Yirka

A trio of researchers with McMaster, Concordia and Trent Universities has solved the mystery of why pairs of grapes ignite into fireballs when cooked together in a microwave oven

...The tests consisted mostly of using thermal imaging cameras to capture the action as the grapes were heated and running simulations. They also tested other similarly sized fruit and plastic balls filled with water.

I heard Thomas Carlyle said it.

” No grapes, no glory.”

I don’t need much more of a raisin than that.

Do you receive any residuals from that?

Uhhhh, I learned that’s not such a good idea when my daughter decided to boil an egg in the microwave.

Good thermal cameras are still a bit beyond the average American’s discretionary spending budget. “Consumer grade” thermal cameras $1500 to $6000 ... professional or laboratory grade thermal cameras $10,000 to $30,000.

No, raisins might be to dry to work properly?

I blew open a microwave door in a SCIF doing that.
Luckily it was on mid shift...

“Consumer grade” thermal cameras ...

Like a Flir C3?
Or maybe The Flir One Pro???

A couple of hundred dollars.

I was shopping for one last week for a project.
The wife and I installed a heated tile floor with 300 ft of pex we did it all!
Wanted to watch it work.

No Flir camera needed to see the fireball/ grape trick.

It is quite visible.

High strength niobium or beryllium Alloy steel and magnetic torus containment fields are expensive and unnecessary! For 2 grapes a bit of lead lining as cladding are all that are needed! (Safety first! Always have fire extinguishers handy !)

Since we are going into a Massive cooling period we just crack the door (Stand back!) and allow the excess heat (if any) produced by the resulting plasma cloud to escape and counteract the global cooling that threatens life on the planet!

As always, we need additional research grant money to determine if we can extend the process to an entire crush of grapes and to evaluate of the quality of the wine produced! Again, this all depends upon obtaining proper permitting by the Atomic Enerqy Agency! :)

No ... those are “toy grade” thermal cameras.

“FLIR C3, FLIR One Pro”

I’ve used both of those. They’re cute. I’ve also used the “Vue pro” series and the “T660”. You get what you pay for.

The fact that the FLIR One even exists, though, is pretty remarkable.

(Yes, it has something to do with my job. “Company Money” is a whole different animal from “My Money”.)

FLIR camera was used to actually analyze the effect. I read the article ...

I realize that I'm probably taking this thing a bit too seriously. In the interest of further levity, I just wonder what Grape Ape might have to do with the whole business:

Kind of have doubts about your magnetic containment levitating the grape?
The plasma, no problem, the grape???
And typically the energy demands of your tokamak exceed any gains.
Word is, you can use that electric meter for a meat slicer!!!

Might be better off with ‘cold fusion’?
Or maybe a Mr Fusion?

What irks me aout this bit of news is that we did this kinda stuff back in the day and didn’t get a thin dime’s worth of grant money for it !
grrrrr
For nothing more than a little beer money, we’d have been happy to share our findings with the world !

I may need to sulk about this for an hour or two . . .
