FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A newlywed woman from Belarus who was swept away by a river in Alaska was trying to reach an abandoned bus made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.”

Veramika Maikamava, 24, and her husband, Piotr Markielau, also 24, on Thursday were heading for the bus where hiker Christopher McCandless met his death in 1992, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

The bus has been the source of multiple rescues since it was made famous, first by Jon Krakauer’s book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn’s 2007 film. Both chronicled the life and death of McCandless, who hiked into the Alaska wilderness with little food and equipment and spent the summer living in the bus. McCandless was found dead in the bus almost four months later.

The bus was originally put there by the company constructing the road to the Stampede Mine.

I understand there is a bridge about two miles downstream from where he could not cross because of the high, swift water...

How did the bus get there? Can’t they just take the road it travelled on?

Airlift the bus and put it on a shoppingmall display tour.

“Meantime while she was trying to reach the bus, normal people were going to work.”

They shouldn’t feel superior, people get killed trying to get to work too. Some get killed at work or going home.

Everybody dies somehow, no matter how smart they are.

It was brought in as support for some kind of backwoods construction project years ago. I think it was pulled there by a dozer.

The road was nothing more than a cleared path that has since been reclaimed by the forest.

I was in Alaska in May and they had a copy of the bus on the side of the highway. The folks I met didn’t want to tell the location of the original bus so people didn’t try to find it. According to them the rangers have had to save many people attempting it

McCandless was a fool.

Not really. There was a documentary on him, and his sisters revivals what a serious scumbag their father was. Thier father destroyed Them by having another family on the side and neglecting all his 1st kids and was extremely abusive to his first wife and kids. . He just couldn’t take him or his mother who stayed with him. He just wanted to vanish and live like grizzly Adams....just picked the wrong place and wrong time to do it. He had even killed a moose before he died, but the meat went rotten.

Allow me to fill you in on the movie.

My wife enjoyed the book and forced me to watch the “Into the Wild” movie. I didn’t like it. The main character was written as a total Mary Sue. Everywhere he wandered people thought he was the most wonderful person ever as he spouted his naive nonsense. They’d swoon and beg him to stay but no, no, he is off on his grand adventure to fix the world but he’ll be back. “Oh we’ll wait! we’ll wait and pray each day for your swift return” they’d basically all say as he walked off.

Then he died stupidly which by that point just made me laugh.

From what I read of it, he ate some plant which was bad and got very sick (vomiting or diarrhea, I can’t recall); to the point he was unable to walk.

**He had even killed a moose before he died, but the meat went rotten.**

Repeat: McCandless was a fool.

So, you agree with me?

Dreamers usually are. The difference between the dream that succeeds and the dream that fails, is that majority of us will try neither.
