Sylvia Galva Crespo, 32, was killed by a spear to the chest at home in Hallandale Beach, Florida, north of Miami, in July, which her husband, Adam Crespo, 43, has portrayed as a mysterious accident.

But police believe the Amazon Echo smart speaker devices in the home, known as Alexa because of the common “wake” word used to activate them, may have heard and recorded something relevant during the fatal altercation when the couple argued after a night out, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Adam Crespo is charged with second-degree murder.

When police were called to the home in July they found Sylvia Galva Crespo bleeding profusely, with a friend of the woman, who had been out with the couple, trying to save her life. Adam Crespo said the spear had snapped during the altercation and the 12in blade had somehow pierced his wife’s chest. He pulled the blade out “hoping it was not too bad”,

I think there was a Gilligan’s island episode that featured this plot.

Yep, if this had happened anyplace other than Florida the headline would have included the spear.

More detail here. Sounds like the spear a decoration and was at the foot of the bed maybe leaning precariously against the bed post or if it was an ornament was hanging on a wall over the bed and got knocked off or grabbed onto and pulled off. She had been drinking and he probably wasn’t too sober himself. Their guest, her friend, was in the other room after they’d all come back in from having some drinks. His wife wanted and he got in an argument he says because she wanted to stay in the bedroom on the bed and he wanted her to go with him back to the living room with the guest was waiting. The guest didnt see anything but heard an argument and heard the wife say ‘do you want me to make a scene?’ To get his wife up, he says he tried dragging her off the bed by grabbing her by the ankles with his back turned to her and in the process dragged her off the end of the bed where the spear was, unless she had it as part of making a scene, or tried to grab onto it to stop him from dragging her off the bed. Not sure if she was laying on her belly or her back but sounds like she was on her back and the blade went in at a sharp angle under the ribs and through to her sternum.

He’s got to be innocent. Who DOESN’T keep a handy supply of razor-sharp SPEARS on hand at home?

Pulling the blade out was a ‘nice’ touch, pretty much guaranteeing she’d bleed out.

Believe it or not I have about 6 spears, plus three dozen dull practice spears, and three atlatls here ...but they have small blades and I don’t keep them in the bedroom.

He sounds like they had a Masai lion spear.

We have some collector’s knifes (Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, an ‘Arkansas Toothpick’ LOL!) but not as ‘decor’ in our bedroom!

Oh, well. ‘Florida Man’ explains it all. ;)

Anyone who allows one of these IOT devices in their home is just asking for trouble. As this article points out.

So - who on earth keeps a spear with a 12 inch blade in their bedroom? Spears are really difficult to use as a close-quarters weapon, so it’s really hard to imagine one that just happens to be nearby, pointed in the correct direction and yet ignored by everyone involved.

Probably lucky that I’m not on that jury.
