Reenactment of Washington’s crossing of Delaware completed

WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa. (AP) ” Thousands turned out Wednesday to watch the annual reenactment of George Washington’s daring Christmas Day crossing of the Delaware River in 1776 ” the first time the crossing was completed in three years.

The event was scrapped because of bad weather the last two years, but historical interpreter Nancy O’Leary said at Washington Crossing Historical Park that the conditions this year ‘couldn’t be better.’

‘We had lovely weather, and we probably had record attendance,’ said Jennifer Martin, executive director of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. She estimated that 4,500 to 5,000 people were watching the event, the highlight of a historical reenactment that draws people to the banks of the river in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and Titusville, New Jersey.

Other activities include Washington’s address to his troops, historical speeches and processions, and staff in period clothing providing public interpretation.

Last year, high water conditions scuttled plans for the crossing in the wooden Durham boats. The year before, high winds prompted cancellation of the event.

In the original crossing, boats ferried 2,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 18 cannons across the river. Washington’s troops marched 8 miles (13 kilometers) downriver before battling Hessian mercenaries in the streets of Trenton. Thirty Hessians were killed, and two Continental soldiers froze to death on the march.

No, but George Washington has been subpoenaed to appear in Adam Schiff’s basement in January on suspicion of rebelling against England’s King. Some sort of ‘collusion’ or something.

I did this two years ago. It was very nice although the weather would have made the General smile instead of grimace! Then lunch at a beautiful restaurant in the area. I love Bucks County!

This is cool.

I would give anything to be able to go back and time and observe stuff like this. While reenactments are great, they often are full of subtle inaccuracies.

They picked me a few years ago to play Washington but the boat kept sinking halfway across.

But I’ve been dieting and the boat might make it 3/4 across this time!!

Thanks for posting an reenactment of a critical happening in before we were even a country.

That’s hilarious! What’s a Staten Island guy doing in Bucks County may I ask? (Merry Christmas, btw.)

I'm reminded of the last major battle of the Civil War, The Battle Of Blakeley Island. Some people wanted to do a re-enactment of that battle...the effort was eventually abandoned because no-one would volunteer to be the Yankees.

I considered that possibility. I will say the Washington we saw wasn’t exactly a sylph.

As you probably know, there has been an exodus of NYC-area people to the Poconos for some time. Further, many people live in Lower Bucks Co and take the train from Trenton/Hamilton/Princeton Junction to Penn Station. It is a brutal 2-2.5hr commute each way, but you get to concealed carry at home. On any given weekend, you can find lots of NY license plates as you walk around New Hope or any other tourist-trap artist's colony.

As for Italian guys, I'd recommend dining at Cafe Antonio in Morrisville if you're in Lower Bucks. The food is really good, even if the interior isn't a little over-the-top. Mangia!

Lol @ bad weather stopping them the previous 2 years. Too bad ol’ George and company didn’t have that luxury.

Yea, that was a little odd. I know for years they did it regardless of the weather. One year they basically walked across the Delaware because it was mostly frozen.

Thank you for those photos! Before we moved south, we looked at several homes in Bucks County along the Delaware River. We’ve always loved the area and usually dine at The Black Bass every season of the year. I miss it!
