Baptist group: Remove rebel symbol from Mississippi flag

Mississippi's largest religious group said Tuesday that state lawmakers have a moral obligation to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag because many people are “hurt and shamed” by the symbol.

“While some may see the current flag as a celebration of heritage, a significant portion of our state sees it as a relic of racism and a symbol of hatred,” the Mississippi Baptist Convention said in a statement. “The racial overtones of this flag's appearance make this discussion a moral issue.”

The AP is obsessed with all things Confederate. Not a surprise they’d dedicate an article to this “news.”

Not surprising. The seminaries and top leadership of the SBC have been converged for a while.

They should go back to this -- the Mississippi state flag from 1861 to 1865:

Magnolia flag

Mississippi Baptist Convention should not be embroiled in any political issues.

This has been going on for a long time. The current flag wasn’t even the flag for decades because of legislative oversight going back to 1906 they didn’t have an official flag at all. Oops! None of the public universities will fly this version of the flag. Several localities including Biloxi won’t fly this flag either.

It’s time to move on. They can go back to their original magnolia flag or adopt a new design.

“celebration of heritage”

and the heritage they are celebrating is the four years when Mississippi fought against the United States of America in an effort to preserve slavery.

Should not be changing, taking anything down unless EVERYTHING comes down that is offensive to anyone. Why is only some people are deciding for everyone else what is or is not offensive and what should or should not be changed/taken down?

Thankfully the Arkan-saw flag has been spared, but it has been compared to a Rebel Battle Flag, sawn in half and the bottom and top reversed to make a diamond, in honor of the diamond mine park in the state.

While I think the pulling down of monuments and whitewashing of history is completely totally and utterly assinine -- there are some things that should be placed in museums and dustbins.

In this case, this is not the hill to make a stand on. It is time for Miss. to move on.

They already voted on changing the MS state flag about the same time Georgia did theirs, and gave us the abomination that was “King Roy’s Placemat”...they voted, I believe, in the high 50-percent range to keep it.

It’s time to move on.

I think that is up to the people of Mississippi.

OMG! You mean Mississippi didn't have slavery when it had been part of the United States for "four score and seven years"?

I didn't know they only adopted slavery in 1861. I thought it was already there when they were part of the United States.

Of course this must be wrong, because if slavery was already there while they were part of the United States, they wouldn't have been able to fight for slavery, because you can't fight for something you already have, and which no one is trying to take away from you.

If the people of Mississippi decide to "move on", that is their business, but my response to a pressure campaign is not only "F*** you!" but "What else can I do to piss these people off even more?

The answer to a pressure campaign should always be "no."

You never give screaming tantrum throwing brats what they want. Never.
