Bizarre and Horrifying Cases of Mass Hysteria Through History

The term ‘hysteria’ derives from the Greek word ‘hystera’ meaning ‘uterus,’ and is generally attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates.

In the 15th century, another outbreak of mass hysteria occurred in Germany when a nun in a convent started biting the other sisters. Before long, the behavior spread throughout the convent and, as news spread further afield, so too did the phenomenon, resulting in biting outbreaks in convents across Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

After a few examples of nuns being punished, the behavior quickly subsided.

In the 1844 book ‘Epidemics of the Middle Ages’...an account is given of a nun in a convent in France who began to meow like a cat. Shortly afterward, other nuns began exhibiting the same behavior, until the whole convent was plagued with meowing nuns.

The Tanganyika laughter epidemic began on Jan. 30, 1962, at a mission-run boarding school for girls in Kashasha, Tanzania. The laughter started among three girls but quickly spread throughout the entire school, persisting for hours, days, and then weeks, leading to its closure on March 18, 1962. But it didn’t end there. After the school was closed, the mass hysteria spread to other schools and eventually to other nearby villages. Thousands of children were affected by the epidemic, and 14 schools were forced to close. The hysteria eventually died down some eighteen months after it started.

The definition of hysteria itself explains the first couple of examples in the article. That’s as far as I got.

We have at least a half-dozen male Russian hysterics who would benefit greatly from a hysterectomy.

The current list is pretty long. For a few loud voices. Most folks are too busy trying to live their lives.

I see hysteria every time I walk by my grocery stores pharmacy and see people wearing a mask while waiting to get a shot for an ailment they have a 99.8% chance of recovering from.

Of all the animals on this planet, humans are the oddest lot, by far.

I believe that most media stories are attempted form of mass hysteria. Half of all I’ve read on FR this morning are hysterical.

Wearing masks that don’t work and shaming those that don’t wear them is an example of mass hysteria. Shunning and shaming those that don’t want and refuse to get the experimental Covid vaccine (actually gene therapy, not a vaccine) is another example of mass hysteria. For the last 2 years we have been living with mass hysteria; too many of our fellow human beings are afflicted with it.

It is interesting to watch. The defense and support over the years of Bush, Lindsey Graham, McCain, WMD in Iraq, Patriot Act, Mitt Romney, Drudge...etc etc and all the freepers who were attacked for daring to have a different opinion.

People can be mass brainwashed, too. I’m leary of the masses. I don’t want to be a regular part of any group.
