Ann Arbor, Mich., was ranked the best place to live in the United States, according to a new review of cities most frequently cited on national lists.
The city, located to the southwest of Detroit, is home to around 121,000 residents and the public University of Michigan. The region’s low crime rates, diverse job market, and growing technology industry helped push Ann Arbor to the top of the list.
The Michigan city was followed by Raleigh, N.C.; Huntsville, Ala.; Fayetteville, Ark.; and Colorado Springs, Colo., respectively.
Researchers based the list on 10 different rankings compiled by Business Insider, Travel + Leisure, Bankrate, and other sources.
An expanding technology sector also helped push Raleigh, N.C., to the second slot. The state’s capital is part of the region’s Research Triangle. Combined, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are home to three top research universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respectively.
The region has attracted big industry names. In 2021, Apple announced a $1 billion investment to build a campus and engineering hub in the Triangle, a move that’s expected to bring around 3,000 jobs to the area.
Ranked third overall, Huntsville, Ala., is the fastest-growing city in that state thanks in part to its popularity with tech companies and craft breweries, according to the report. The city is also attractive to artists, as it is home to the largest privately owned arts facility in the South.

You got to be kidding.
looking to retire soon, and sadly I am starting to think the best place to live is no longer the united states at all....don’t like the trend the country is on, and I don’t see it getting any better in my lifetime - if ever.
Yet lots of folks move to Dallas-Fort Worth or Florida.
“ Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are home to three top research universities”
All universities are “research universities” now. It’s the newest buzzword and they all have a certificate that proves it. They have risen above mere education. This means your class is taught by a TA, professors never show, and they can jack up the tuition rates.
Fundamental flaw in this report:
Different people have different requirements for best place.
Ann Arbor might be great place if you have kids in high-school to college age brackets. It is horrible place for retired folks. Housing is expensive and taxes are high compared to other states.
If your career is in manufacturing, there are better opportunities in many places other than Ann Arbor.
AZ #1 to move to last year! Booo yahhhh!
Although I will give Chapel Hill credit for inventing COVID-19 before they shipped it out to Wuhan.
Because Florida & Texas are low tax states. Much better for seniors.
I thought in general housing is cheap in college towns.
I am with you on that thought.
IF it was up to me I would strongly consider southern Italy.
Now, I just have to convince Mrs Woodbutcher
I’m surprised there aren’t any California cities near the top of the list. I mean, they need to start pumping up Newsom’s resume now, don’t they?! /s
It’s also unbearable if you don’t have cold weather.
Somehow I knew it would be some place like that. No thanks.
It wears its leftism on its sleeve. I have to believe that was an ingredient that propelled it to the top by a biased set of "desirable" factors.
and the worst f'in roads in the nation are right here in Colorado Springs. Without a doubt!
Cultural rot is not something that can be easily turned around and it seems to have lots of momentum in this country.
All ranking lists such as this, all depend on the criteria being used to evaluate these places.
We all use different criteria to choose a place to live, choose what jobs to take, and just in general, how to live our lives.
College towns are often expensive places nowadays.
College kids tend to vote leftist. Expect wacky municipal policies in your golden years.

The Carolina Triad without question has appeal for the yuppie types.Retirees not so much.
