A new treatment for tinnitus using vibrations created by synthesised music, improved symptoms in almost all patients during its first trial.
The sonic brain reprogramming treatment, based on sound vibrations that pass through a bone behind the ear, helped eight out of ten of the patients who had twice-weekly sessions of the therapy.
Its inventors, who are planning larger trials, say the technology could be a real breakthrough for the one in ten people who suffer with the debilitating condition at some time.
Tinnitus is the sensation of a sound in the ear, usually a hissing, whooshing or ringing noise.
Once, it was thought tinnitus was caused by a physical problem, but one new theory is that in some people it's the result of the brain turning up its sensitivity, while in others it's a consequence of a change or loss in hearing.
Although it can be triggered by underlying problems, including earwax, respiratory and ear infections, exposure to loud noise, and high blood pressure, the cause is often unknown.
In some cases it is linked to ageing and deteriorating hearing, but it can occur where there is no hearing loss.
'A third of people I see have some hearing loss and tinnitus is strongly associated with that. In another third of cases, the tinnitus appears to have started at a time of great stress, bereavement, redundancy, mugging, or some other kind of a big life event.
'In another third we don't know,' says David Baguley, head of audiology at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
One theory to explain some cases of tinnitus is that we all have these sounds in our ears, but that we are conditioned to them, in much the same way that people who live next to a road become oblivious to traffic noise.

*ouch*
I was diagnosed with a meningioma, essentially a tumor made from the tissues that line the brain. It was sitting at a location in the center of my brain where the nerves from the ears come together. I had been experiencing moderate to severe tinnitus. It was a high-pitched note, probably C above high C on the treble scale. After radiation treatment the volume increased until it sounded like an opera diva trying to shatter a wine glass. About three weeks after the final treatment, I noticed the sound was gone. I still have tinnitus, but it is barely noticeable. There are probably a dozen different causes of tinnitus. Over the counter pain relief medications really turns my tinnitus volume up. But I wonder how many people have a “benign” tumor and don’t know it. Apparently the one I had was very common. The only reason it was treated was its location. The brain surgeon who sent me for treatment said, “given where it is, if it changes its personality and become invasive by the time we find out there will be nothing we can do.”
I’m sorry, could you repeat that? I didn’t here that correctly.
Pretty neat, if true. I have tinnitus, as well as being hearing impaired. Every little bit helps.

I have tinnitus. As well as the feeling that I’m wearing ear muffs. My hearing has declined in recent years.
This looks great. But it doesn’t look like its available to the public just yet.
>> Once, it was thought tinnitus was caused by a physical problem...
old news, right?
For the last couple of decades, I’ve been under the impression the ringing “sound’ is an artificial reproduction of the frequencies the ear can no longer process — or a subset of the frequencies. Annoying but nonetheless fascinating
Naturally, the tinnitus gets activated by these pings... lol
I finally got 50% disability for damaged hearing.
Any fix will likely happen after I am long gone.
Thanks for making me think about it (in my right ear)
I hadn’t really noticed the 24-7 ringing today until you mentioned it
If this treatment works - send help
“Over the counter pain relief medications really turns my tinnitus volume up.” Thanks for the insight. Youtube has helpful music videos for tinnitus.
He left out the J&J jab.
Will the MOOG synthesizer in ELP’s Lucky Man reverse the constant ringing?
If so, I’ll crank it up. That should help.
Bilateral tinnitus and unilateral hyperacusis here - why doesn’t the article name or link to the study? Really tired of snake oil salesmen preying on people desperate for relief….
bkmk
let’s hope it works.
I got it two.
And my tinnitus varies leaving me with a varying ‘noise floor’ in my hearing.
At times in a quiet room I can hear good speech on TV perfectly.
At age 68 I find noises making it much harder to discern conversation than in earlier years. Tinnitus just being one source of sounds in that noise floor. Other talking in the general area mask my ability to understand as well.
At 68 also I have a lot of trouble understanding 3 of my five grandkids who talk to me in soft voices like they do to each other. The other two I can understand ok.
