March 14 (UPI) -- An Australian berry company broke a Guinness World Record by growing a Ping-Pong-sized berry that weighs .72 ounce.
A Guinness adjudicator examined the blueberry grown by Costa Berries in Corindi, New South Wales, and confirmed it was the world's heaviest blueberry.
Brad Hocking, head of the team that grew the berry, said it was picked in November last year and kept frozen while the company communicated with Guinness World Records.
The blueberry is the new Eterna variety developed by Costa Berries.
Hocking said his team hasn't decided what to do with the record-breaking berry.
"We all look at it occasionally and smile," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. "I don't think a smoothie would be the right fate for it."
My guess is he represents the blueberry — or maybe the grape — guild ...
Happen to live in the town of Hammonton, NJ, blueberry capital of the world.Grew up pickin, and packing them most of my life (so far). Best tasting and largest variety is the Elizabeth, Blue Ray, and Blue Crop. Unfortunately the first two do not travel well. To get the best you need to get them right off the bush.
It was over selection for longer storage for supermarkets that doomed them. Then Fuji and HoneyCrisp came along.
I’ve always wondered what the pre supermarket era Red Delicious tasted like. I wonder if anyone has any of the original cultivars on an old farm somewhere.
Used to pick Blue Ray’s in the soviet fiefdom of Red Hampshire (spit)...the berries were awesome1
You are exactly right. I have tried quarter-sized blueberries and they have no flavor at all.
My mom loved that variety. My favorite is Elizabeths. My friend who has a farm kept a small field of them just for personal use. They are useless for selling at market because they only last about three days.
Almost always the case with carrots and strawberries
And before the mockingbirds get them!
Decades ago my father grew bluberries in Winslow, Camden county, NJ.
The best nutrients are in the skin. Costco sells Wynman’s frozen blueberries which purport to have double the antioxidants. They are a bit smaller than peas. This gigantic one has hardly any beneficial nutrients at all.
Blueberry or blue berry?
OK, somebody explain to me the difference between blueberries and huckleberries.
My grandmother always called what I now understand to be Blueberry Pie a ‘Huckleberry’ pie. I don’t know where she ever ate a huckleberry, spending all of her life in the Midatlantic; but maybe she learned it from her husband, who had been all over the country...???
Huckleberries are small and gritty with seeds. They are similar colored but taste very different..........
Thanks :-)
I think I’ll always call it ‘Huckleberry’, just because that’s what I grew up thinking.
