Dwindling immigration puts squeeze on home building

Foreign-born people make up almost a third of construction workers in the U.S. But their numbers have dropped in recent years, making it tougher for contractors to find workers.

New home construction is key to unlocking lower housing prices. But the rate of this type of construction has fallen month to month since March 2022, and experts say tough immigration policies that have shrunk the construction workforce are behind the building squeeze.

Lower immigration was a policy goal of the Trump White House, and the administration issued several policies toward that goal from 2017 to 2021, including freezing visas. The administration also took several hard stances toward undocumented immigrants, issuing executive orders for a wall along the southern border, deploying additional Border Patrol agents, and instituting the Migrant Protection Protocols, which forced asylum-seekers to stay in Mexico while waiting for hearings.

Article from last year but posted here in absolute disbelief that this is how the construction industry actually sees the invasion of the U.S. We just hired a roofing/general contractor here in Florida. The work crew that came out to our house was totally Spanish with no English spoken and the work performed was substandard. We were promised a project manager who spoke English however one was available only for the first hour then disappeared. We got a fast job, not a good job.

We’ve only added 10 million more ‘workers’, but then the border is under control too!

3D printed houses can be made with minimal labor.

The are about 2/3 the cost of wood framed homes.

They aren't alone as Tyson proves that fact. Diminish though?

Jasmine Cui is either gaslighting or is not paying attention at all.

It’s hard to poke and stare at your cellphone all day if you’re a construction worker. You might hit your cellphone with a hammer or something.

The investment in the printers is far more than the investment in foreign cheap labor workers.

“New home construction is key to unlocking lower housing prices.”

What a psycho. Interest rates and inflation not to mention crime/insurance have nothing to do with buying a home. /s

Granted, given the abject, cow-like inclination of “journalists” to parrot the Leftist lines, stupidity is also quite possible.

Why should the new illegal aliens work construction, or anything else, when they’re given everything at taxpayer expense?

I have a feeling a significant number of our present invaders are more interested in and skilled in destruction rather than construction.

And true for most assembly line work, like meat packing, furniture manufacturing and throughout most all industry.

I spent the summer of '94 framing houses. With no prior experience, I was paid $10/hr. At the time, it was the most money I'd ever made and the hardest work I'd ever done.

We were building houses in the exploding new suburbs around Denver and there was as much work as we wanted. We'd work from dark to dark, Monday though Saturday.

At the time, all of the construction crews were white men.

Eventually, it was discovered that Mexicans would work for far less and so went white construction workers.
