State Sen. Eric Johnson was among the first prominent Georgians to jump on the Fred Thompson for President bandwagon.
The Savannah Republican helped persuade dozens of state lawmakers to endorse the former Tennessee senator earlier this year.
But he remained relatively quiet after Thompson officially entered the GOP race this summer.
Until last week, that is.
That was when Thompson slipped to fifth place in one national poll after doing only a little better in other recent ones. Earlier, he'd led in one national poll and stayed near the front of the pack in others.
Against that backdrop, Johnson weighed in on behalf of Thompson through an e-mail to friends and supporters.
He quickly sized up the competition: former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
"You know where Rudy stands on the issues," he said. "... Giuliani is wrong on guns and life. He is clearly not the pro-family candidate. He is questionable on immigration."
Johnson claimed the problem with Romney is that you can't tell where he stands.
"Romney has flipped-flopped badly on many issues," Johnson said. "Can you trust him?"
And Huckabee?
"He's made some moves - primarily because he is good on his feet in the debates. Huckabee is right on life but is for amnesty for illegals and raised taxes more than Clinton while governor of Arkansas."
Maybe; maybe not. For example, Huckabee has just unveiled a tough border-control plan.
Johnson apparently didn't think Arizona Sen. John McCain, who actually led Thompson in one recent national poll, rated a potshot.
In any case, that left Thompson.
Johnson says he's "right" on taxes, immigration, gun rights and school choice - and is backed by the National Right to Life Committee.
The GOP, he claimed, needs a nominee who can unite conservatives and attract independents like Ronald Reagan did.
Only Thompson can do that, Johnson said.
Think what you want of Johnson's assessment.
But credit him for being a rainy-day friend.

Georgia... Fred is your man.
I believe that Fred Thompson is going to surprise the MSM big time when he not only does very well in Iowa, but in New Hampshire as well! I think that many conservatives in this country are just now beginning to look into the records of the candidates. The more they learn, the more they will see that Fred is the real conservative among the so called top tier candidates. GO FRED!

Agreed. The majority of people are just beginning to notice and learn about the candidates.
Do you trust someone who has exhibited a life long record of supporting liberalism, or do you trust someone who has spent a life time supporting conservatism? Do you trust someone who has taken multiple positions on the critical issues of our time, or do you support someone who is consistent on all the issues.
I trust Fred Thompson. Of the top five candidates, Fred is the one true genuine conservative running for the nomination.
When it comes down to conservatism, the rest are a bunch of phonies and frauds.

On immigration issues, particularly, I can understand why a candidate would change their mind. There has been a lot of statistical evidence collected and disseminated over the last few years, via NumbersUSA, etc., that was not readily available before. Just knowing how adamantly the public opposes amnesty, and benefits for illegals, would also be a legitimate, and acceptable, reason for changing political stance.

Don’t point this out to some freepers, that is, unless you want to hear how polls don’t matter, how Fred is going to start campaigning any day now, how he has a secret plan, blah blah blah.
Here’s the reality.
Fred stinks as a candidate.
The more he campaigns, the fewer commitments for votes he gets.
He will not survive after South Carolina.
The only interesting question about Fred’s candidacy, is, why the heck did he do this? He “could” have been a great candidate, but he has approached this in such a poor, lazy, sloppy manner that it makes you wonder why he even bothered.
