He's no Sarah Palin...Liberal Congressman Ron Paul becomes conservatives' surprise top choice
The London Daily Mail ^ | February 14, 2011 | Daniel Bates

Liberal GOP congressman Ron Paul has become the surprise choice by conservative Republicans to be the party’s presidential candidate for next year’s elections.

The Texan took 30 per cent of the votes cast by the American Conservative Union, beating Mitt Romney into second place on 23 per cent.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich got a mere five per cent - but that was more than Sarah Palin, who managed just three per cent of the ballots.

It was the second year in a row that Mr Paul had topped the CPAC vote, suggesting that support for him could be building into something solid.

But commentators were quick to point out that Mr Romney remained the favourite and that the vote could have been skewed by the young age of voters and poor turnout.

Mr Paul ran for the Republican ticket to the White House in 2008 but came in last place as his liberal message fell flat with many voters.

The 75-year-old has said that he is against the stringent budget cuts put forward by his Tea Party contemporaries and claimed that the U.S. does not have a moral responsibility to spread its good around the world.....

No surprise at all. There are bunches of Paulites among the student attendees and the students are half or more of CPAC.

The Daily Mail is their New York Daily News as I understand it. It's not a blog or a tabloid.

I don’t know what the US equivalent would be but the Daily Mail is a broadsheet national daily.

I wouldn’t trust the Mail for international news of any kind - they’re better than the Mirror or the Express, but that’s not saying much. Here they conflate ‘libertarian’ with ‘liberal’, which is a disastrous mistake on both sides of the Atlantic.

“Rabid” is right, Ron Paul is a NUT and any so-called “conservative” that voted for him is NUTS!

That’s silly. Paul will probably garner the most votes at next year’s Circus-PAC too.

He did last year too.

But, Sarah did not bother.

Allen West took her spot and was GREAT.

All you have to know to know that CPAC is irrelevant is this - a guy named Gary Johnson came in third, with 21 percent of the vote. I follow politics pretty closely, and I had to look him up to even find out who he is. He doesn’t have a snowball’s chance of coming anywhere close to winning anything in the primaries. By the way, he’s for legalizing pot use, so put him together with Ron Paul and you’ve got almost 60% of CPAC voters looking like a bunch of potheads. Great job, folks!

Yeah, and Wesley Clark won Dixville Notch, NH in the 2004 Democrat primary. It means just about as much.

With CPAC, not showing up means you don’t get considered.

Heck, if I were there, I’d accept Michelle’s free beer; that’s the honorable way of buying votes.
