Time for right to let go of Bowe Bergdahl political controversy (Must be hurting them)
The Washington Post's Plum Line ^ | June 12, 2014 | Paul Waldman

Posted on 06/12/2014 12:06:01 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Today, the Post published excerpts of Bowe Bergdahl’s journal, along with emails and other writings, giving us the most intimate, complex, and in many ways sad view we’ve yet had of the young man who had been held prisoner by the Taliban for five years.

What the journal ultimately shows suggests that as a partisan political issue, Bergdahl’s release is likely to fade before long. The right has gotten about as much as they can out of it, and now that we know how troubled Bergdahl was before he wandered off his base, they may just let it go.

The idea that Bergdahl wasn’t sufficiently deserving of rescue has been central to the conservative criticism of the deal to obtain his release. Even as they wildly exaggerate the danger of the five former Taliban we released (to hear Fox News tell it, you’d almost think the five not only planned and executed the September 11 attacks, they also have super-powers that will enable them to reduce our nation to ashes any day now), many on the right attacked Bergdahl and his family relentlessly, accusing him of being not just a deserter but an outright traitor. Some even mobilized a PR campaign to promote soldiers who would go in the media to criticize Bergdahl.

But his writings, which were shared with the Post by a close friend, tell a story that doesn’t fit into the kind of box that can be easily used for partisan purposes. Among other things, we now know that Bergdahl joined the Coast Guard in 2006 and was quickly discharged for psychological reasons, though he claimed to friends that he had faked mental illness in order to get released...

The idea that Bergdahl wasn’t sufficiently deserving of rescue has been central to the conservative criticism of the deal to obtain his release.

No conservative objected to his repatriation.

They objected to the blatantly illegal way it was obtained.

Whether or not Bergdahl was fit for the laughing academy when he left post is immaterial.

The administration lied about his physical health.

The administration lied about his service.

The administration illegally failed to notify Congress.

The administration paid a ridiculously high price and tried to dodge the scrutiny that should have accompanied the move.

When our enemies tell us what to do or not to do, we should listen and do the opposite.

This message is aimed at our weak knee Rinos in DC.

Bergdahl is a distraction from Obama’s treason.

Obama has returned 5 top enemy commanders to the enemy which has not surrendered! A blatant overt act of aid to the enemy.

Typical Alinsky tactic of ridiculing those who make legitimate cases against the left but - I will be saving this nugget for when these scumbags kill their first Americans and put it right back in his face

How does this affect criticism of the very bad decision Obama made? The White House did not know about this diary nor about his Coast Guard discharge. This information may or may not bear on the man’s fate, but it has nothing to do with the very bad decision Obama made.

Sorry, the question wasn't intended for you -- it was rhetorical question intended for the author of the column.

I almost added to the original: "dumb leftist journalist can't even use a dictionary", but I thought it was redundant. :-)

The Right gets confused about the BIG issue once again. The BIG issue isn't Bergdahl. Bergdahl isn't an immediate threat to America is he?

The BIG issue here, and one that make Obama a prime candidate for ouster is the release of the five Taliban generals. This has clearly aided and abetted the enemy and and armed the enemy with a heightened threat to the lives and safety of Americans.

The focus needs to stay squarely on Obama. Bergdahl can be dealt with (or not) in due time. It is Oabama who is the ongoing clear and present danger

Bergdahl joined the Coast Guard in 2006 and was quickly discharged for psychological reasons, though he claimed to friends that he had faked mental illness in order to get released.

So Bergdahl is also a liar, in addition to being a deserter and not worth trading five senior terrorists for - illegally. Is that the best case they can make for forgetting yet another bad Obama decision?

“wildly exaggerate the danger of the five former Taliban”

Well of course, five really nice guys that were just down on their luck.
