It's a runoff in two days that is the focus of the country. Mississippi voters will decide the fate of veteran Republican Sen. Thad Cochran. He's being challenged by tea party candidate Chris McDaniel.
The vote comes two weeks after the House majority leader, Eric Cantor, lost a primary stunner in Virginia.
Mississippi's primary runoff is now a political blockbuster. And it's attracting plenty of star power.
"I encourage you to stand with a proven and respected leader," says former NFL quarterback Brett Favre, a Mississippi native, in one TV ad.
"Chris McDaniel is a type of guy who will fight for us," Republican 2008 vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin declares in a radio ad.
The Southern showdown between Cochran and McDaniel has turned into a battle for the ages. Local polls show the race is tight - but polls said the Cantor primary race was close, too.
CBS News' Political Director John Dickerson says the midterm primaries are straddling the GOP's future....

My prediction is they will say it has no significance if McDaniel wins. That will be yet another signal that they have to push amnesty through immediately.
Less than 2 days before the election kicks off.
Thad is a round-heeled follower.
It is an odd situation. Cochran should have been retiring this year, and the Republican leadership should have pressed back at the end of 2013 a new fresh face into the mix. They refused. Instead, the current strategy is for Cochran to run the race, sit for 12-to-18 months, retire, and have the governor appoint someone for the 2016 election period to run themselves. A fresh face, boosted by six to twelve months as a temp. All of this done...to bring another “moderate” Republican into the same seat.

Brett Farve looks like he was he by a truck just before he made his add for thad!

“and have the governor appoint someone for the 2016 election period to run themselves”
Oh, and that isn’t just any someone. We all know who Bryant would pick. He’s a fatass lobbyist with the initials HB.
If CBS is worried, it’s a good sign.
Brett Favre...just winged a pass out of bounds.
Anyone know if this is an open primary?
It will be demoralizing if Independent and Democrat voters decide the future of the GOP in Mississippi.
Yes, it’s open and Cochran has been courting Dems non-stop.
If McDaniel wins, you will never hear about it on the news. It will be down the memory hole, like it never existed .
Important to remember that Mississippi is 37% Black.
No matter who wins the primary, the Republican must get at least 80% of the white vote to guarantee victory.
If the Democrat nominee can get even 25% of the white vote, that might be enough to beat the Republican.
Larry Kudlow interviewed Chris McDaniel on his Saturday morning radio show:

Space out to about the 55 minute mark.
Thad Cochran is one tired old RINO!
Brett Favour is on the wrong team again.
That is very depressing news.
This happens only because we allow the state to pay for our primary election.
There is no reason the Republican Party - in any state - has to live with “open” primaries.
If we pay for and manage our own primaries, we can write the voting rules any way we want to.
I wonder who the Manning clan backs?
