JUDY WOODRUFF: With eight days to go until vote-rich New York weighs in on the high-stakes contests for the Republican and Democratic nominations for president, candidates stepped up their criticisms of each other and made their best cases for more delegates today, the perfect moment to turn to Politics Monday with Tamara Keith of NPR, and Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report.
And we welcome both of you.
So, as we said, no voting this week, but delegate selection goes on. And were hearing a lot of complaining, Amy, from Donald Trump. We just heard him saying the process is crooked.
What is Ted Cruz doing Donald Trump isnt?
AMY WALTER, The Cook Political Report: Right.
There is a process, and it involves rules, and Donald Trump seems to have forgotten that rules actually have been set a long time ago. But heres the two. There are two ways to win the nomination as a Republican. You either come into the convention with 1,237 delegates that is where Trump is ahead and where he could there is still a conceivable path for him to do this by the time we hit June, tough, but conceivable.
Then there is winning the convention at the floor, winning by what were calling a contested convention. Thats where Ted Cruz is doing better. What Ted Cruz is doing is, he understands the rules and the nuances of how the game is played. And that is, when you win a state, you win more than just the votes, you win actual human beings, delegates that go and vote on the floor....

No.
Give it up.
does this guy ever sleep?
It’ll go past the first ballot. But at that point, the floor is open, and I think Jeb will emerge. Maybe by the fifth ballot....Jeb is proclaimed the winner, and we just stand there in disbelief.
Rule 40.
I am pretty sure he is pulling the third shift for Teddy’s crew over at the GOPe, right 2nd?
but that does not mean they are always right. and i cannot blame the cruzers across the board... for once I too was blind (and sent the jerk money) but now I see!
I think he will take a nap after he drops the nightly bombs...
The GOPe may stop Trump through Cruz, exactly what the Democrat Party wants, they fear Trump.
But in stopping Trump the GOP will lose the presidential election of 2016. Such are the wages of not listening to the will of the people.
Welcome to the survival of the Obama legacy and the final destructive Chapter of the USA, from within. The conquest of the USA by forces of evil will have become complete. Your 2024 subsequent president will be a Muslim who will invoke Sharia law.The Supreme Court will approve of the use of either male or female bathrooms at the choice of men with tits. Civil war is in the making now.
Read my tagline & ponder its truthfulness.
Rule 40 can be voted upon and waivered. Once you get around to the 3rd day and there’s no clear agreement...that’s the soap opera point where the ‘new guy’ talk will start, and how you can revoke rule 40.
So you think that delegates loyal to Cruz and Trump (the majority) will vote to rescind Rule 40?
If you look at how states (not all, but at least a couple) have organized the delegate deal....the delegate is tied to candidate for the first round ONLY. After that first vote....state-by-state...there’s differing rules. I suspect that a quarter-to-half of Cruz delegates are fairly open to swing their votes and go after rule 40 by the 3rd day of this affair. Even for Trump....I’ll bet that a quarter to half of his delegates really aren’t iron-clad Trump people like you’d think.
Go back and examine the 1920 GOP convention. The number 6 guy (Harding) from the primary....won....because no one could settle upon any of the top three guys. By the late stage of the convention...a couple of guys swung the vote, and suddenly Harding had enough to win.
Ted should drop out as he is the loser. He has betrayed the grass roots people who believed in him. He should consolidate his power and focus h is efforts to helping Donald defeat the GOP-e and Hillary, who aim to over throw this nation.
He can speed the process by giving up now and use the additional time it would buy as a force multiplier. His only goal now appears to defeat Trump and conjoin himself with the very CARTEL he was raving about last year when I supported him with my hard earned dollars.
So Donald will have to get it done without Ted... for ted has joined the ranks of #NeverTrump... You WILL support Trump if he gets the nomination right?
Do yourself a favor. Look up who the party people were who are the Delegates. You know the ones who control the caucuses and are delegates, etc. Notice one will find mostly the heads of the State GOP PARTY as delegates and their donors as the vast majority? Now tell me, do you really think this historical party machine is Pro-Cruz or Pro-contested convention (Anti-Trump)?
Who are you really helping to get nominated?
I have been one of those people, so I don’t have to look it up.
The Majority of the delegates are not loyal to either Cruz or Trump. They are State Party elites, officers and donors. This is not the Political machines first time- they were well prepared to stop the Tea Party...
They will do as the GOPe directs them. Foolish to assume they would have relinquished their power base to either Cruz or Trump.
“read my tagline... and ponder its truthfulness?”
Whats that all about? a Svengali hypnosis act from the comedy club?
Somebody needs to put the Kool Aid down and step away from the keyboard... maybe me...
I first enjoyed DUNE back in the early to mid sixties... in elementary school... like 700-800 pages or more thick.
The you know the State party officers, and donors make up the majority of the delegates and control the selection process.
But thanks for exposing you are a GOP Party person. Explains a lot.
What else would I be, a Democrat? There are only two parties in this country, it isn’t India.
A GOP party insider is not just any peasant supporting Cruz. Means you are part of the GOPe Machine that is working to elect the GOPe candidate.
