Trump or not, ‘big data’ could be huge in 2016 vote

“Big data” could play a huge role in the 2016 US election, even if Donald Trump doesn’t think so.

Trump, who sailed through the Republican primaries using unconventional campaign rallies and Twitter messages, has indicated that he sees little use for popular data analytics tools to help target specific voters.

But analysts say he may be at a disadvantage in the general election if he stays on that course.

“In the primaries, he was only looking for Republican voters, and in the general he needs all voters,” said Alan Rosenblatt, a digital political strategist...

Targeted for what ? is the question. Campaign mailers ? Phone calls ? I find both irritating in the extreme. Snail mail and landlines are dead and nobody wants their paid-for cellular minutes being eaten up by political cold calls.

I think the best way to reach voters these days is to do what he’s been doing. Appear on TV everywhere. Be a constant presence on Twitter and Facebook. Generate headlines a dozen times a day. Make every plan for the future into a media event. Hold rallies with people cheering the downfall of political correctness and putting America first. Keep people involved and make the election a foregone conclusion.

I don’t buy it.

If all the candidates are running on the platform of managing the dismantling of America through Mexican/Muslim invasion—as Hillary, Bernie, and sixteen Republicans were this past year—then all this data collecting matters.

Since ONLY ONE candidate is running on the platform of AMERICA CONTINUING IN EXISTENCE, he won’t need all that micro-targeting of voters.

“big data” is a tactic from the last century used in conventional campaigns as a substitute for the candidates themselves connecting with the voters on a visceral level. It’s the kind of tactic used by candidates who live in bunkers and communicate with the media and the voters mostly by surrogates.

When both candidates campaign like that, then whoever has the best “big data” might have a better chance at winning.

When the candidate is Donald Trump, who is a true master of both social media and the old media and who is his own best advertisement and spokesperson, “big data” isn’t as important as it is to a bunker candidate like Hillary.

*** In the primaries, he was only looking for Republican voters ***

Untrue, Trump was reaching out to Americans who want their Country pulled back from the precipice.

I imagine data mining is great if you are going to play identity politics and send a tailored message to each little demographic.

Has worked for the past couple of decades, but I think you find that Trump and Sanders are shrugging off that conventional wisdom.

I think this was Obama’s thing, no matter what little group he talked to, he promised them the world and bad-mouthed whatever group he thought they opposed (in private fundraising). This is Hillary’s thing as well.

We are now in the information age (much more so even then when Obama won), and it is easy for folks to check the words of a candidate (unless you are Hillary and you have no transcripts), and how these groups are played off against each other in identity politics.

I see this as a marginally useful tool, honesty on a whole is now more important than appeasing small vocal groups, but I could be wrong.

What's the "unconventional campaign rallies" and "Use of twitter" bit.

IIRC, Obama made a Biiiiiiiiiiiig deal about using his modern gadget.

I agree with you guys that big data is overplayed in elections, and Trump is proving it.

I've thought about "big data" quite a bit.  In fact, a couple years back I authored a telecom industry report on the trend.  And big data is enormously useful in things like search engines, fraud detection, market analysis, network traffic analysis, etc.

But as far as campaigns to raise money or change minds, I techniques is abused to the point of becoming a negative.  Cruz bragged about using big data, but his fund raising campaigns via email were irritating and it was hard to "unsubscribe" from those.

The other thing is the tendency to micro-segment the message -- tell some people one thing and other people another.  It's a real quick way to lose credibility.

Now in the telecom industry, there seems to be a move away from analytics (big data) when it comes to driving personalized emails, SMS messages and the like.

The new approach is to have a personal webpage where the mobile subscriber can see his account balance and view the latest promotion tuned to his orojected "preferences".

If you get people used to going to that web page, then you can dispense with sending all the little begging messages -- which seem more and more like spam.

Back to the campaign...  I wholeheartedly agree that Trump has found the right combination of media outreach and a judicious use of personal email.

” the dismantling of America through Mexican/Muslim invasion”

That sums it up. A concise history of the GW Bush and Obama regimes. Different label, same basic flavor.

I agree, mass mailers, phone calls, negative ads, they are all so predictable and transparent. They are last century. You cited all the ways a pol, who is brave and energetic, can gain publicity and influence people. Much more dynamic and powerful then the ancient tactics of the over paid political consultant class.

Interesting...a few years ago I sat thru a presentation by some data wizards at a State GOP meeting about how we GOP...needed the data they were collecting...ie...personal preferences on EVERYTHING FROM magazines to phone bills and so many of life’s details...my friend and I found it way too personal. People want their privacy even as they give it up, but especially want it from POLITICAL parties!

I'm pretty sure Trump is going to address privacy issues in his term as President.

It's not as big an issue as other things right now, but my hope is he's going to make it easier for people to opt out of these big data from hell issues.
