KGW poll: Smith's senate lead increases
10/30/2002
By JIM PARKER and VINCE PATTON, KGW Staff
With less than a week until election day, it appears Republican incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith has slightly increased his lead over Democratic opponent Bill Bradbury -- according to a new KGW poll of likely Oregon voters.
Smith currently garners support from 56% of those surveyed, up from 52% just a week ago.
Bradburys support has remained steady during this one-week period at 34%. Only 5% of voters remain undecided.
Constitution Party candidate Lon Mabon garnered 2% of the vote, and Libertarian candidate Dan Fitzgerald had 1%.
The poll conducted for Northwest NewsChannel 8 by Riley Research Associates surveyed 604 likely Oregon voters. It was conducted from Oct. 23 to Oct. 28 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
While Im not ready to call this race, said pollster Mike Riley, Its going to be one that for most observers is considered a done deal.
Not only has Smiths lead grown by 4% overall since a week ago, hes also showing increases among Democrat crossover voters.
Our latest poll shows 32% of Democrats say they support Smith. Thats up from 27% in our last poll.
Smith also continues to enjoy majority support from both men and women, the poll shows.
Im sure that Bill Bradbury has been disappointed, said KGW political analysts Len Bergstein. But hes been buried by $5 million in advertising. As a result, hes never gotten off the mat.
Money moves your numbers in a U.S. Senate race, he added. And Smith has to feel very happy at this point.

I voted as soon as I had my mail-in ballot in hand. Maybe I should have waited a bit.
You're right, he's pro "a lot of stuff that isn't Conservative" which is why he gets so much of the Rat vote. And he's probably the most conservative person we can get elected in this State.

I work for the government (public works) so I might still have a job. Of course, liberals don't exactly want roads to be maintained so then again, I may not have a job.

I wonder what is Smith's secret? He's running in a liberal state and he's got it in the bag. I've heard he's a moderate, but not so much the Arlen Specter-Snowe-Collins type. So what's his appeal?

Thanks EBUCK.

Thanks for the post and the pings! I'm glad to see him pulling away. I was uncomfortable with the polls for a while. It was way too close!
"The Green Jihadists do not want Smith to be re elected.
Too bad we can't flash on the bill board, "Vote for Smith"!"
You're right, Gramps! The weenie greenie's will hate this!
" I wanted to cast mine for Fitz but though this one was too important....guess it really wouldn't have mattered."
Thanks for the vote, EBUCK. I just hope the Smith supporters in NH will be as smart as you have been and vote for Sununu. For the life of me, I can't understand any conservative who would deliberately vote to let Daschle continue as the Senate Majority Leader.

I think the health thing will not pass. The Oregonian ad stating that this would bring financial ruin to Oregon has been running a lot.

**Kulongoski winning **
I don't think so. There has been a huge effort by Right to Life and Catholic Family Association to get Mannix elected. And I think Oregonians want a change.
In other words, Republican win (upset)!
To: Salvation
I hope you're right. I bet $5 with a coworker that Mannix would lose and told him that if I had to pay him I'd do it with a huge grin on my face. I just think that theres too much ignorance of politics among most Oregonians and too much vote fraud in Multnomah County. You watch, Portland precincts will be the very last to tally their votes, and if I remember correctly they still are using punchcard ballots.

Bradbury just attacked Smith for being against assisted suicide. It was a poor ad and made Bradbury look like an idiot. Smith is a Rino. His ads on the west side make him look like a lib & ads on the East side portray him as a conservative.

**they still are using punchcard ballots.**
But I thought it was a statewide "mail-in" election.
To: Salvation
Yep, you're right. You are mailed a punchcard ballot and mail it back. But punchcards are the easiest ballot to commit fraud with. Lay a stack on a table and drive a nail through the Kulongoski hole.

Yup, RINO he certainly is. I think he was a full blown RAT right up until he had to run in a conservative district (IIRC?), then he swapped banners.

We don't get punch cards down here (in the valley). We get ballots that have little holes to fill in with my crusty black pen.
I imagine that they are a bit harder to forge but if a guy was inclined he could just create a template....
