I'll step in for americanbychoice for the time being:

This site is only German AFAIK.

The first link brings you to the title page. You can see the article...."USA schließen Standorte"....4 articles down.

"WELT am Sonntag"....Title Page....USA schließen Standorte

The second link is linked to the article itself, but that brings me a page that requires a login page. It says you can read the article for free, but you have to register. I didn't sign up because I'm on a dial-up now and the connection is frustratingly slow for me.

"WAMS"....USA schließen Standorte

Oh, I found the article all right. But I am not a registered user, therefore I can't read it. I just thought the poster should have posted the whole article, plus a link to it. It's pretty much SOP here.

I don't care what language it's in. As it is, it's in German- a language I do understand, so this is not a bother. Still, the onus should be on the one who posts the article, not for every individual poster to go out and round up the article. This is why the "Post Article" page is formatted as it is with all the relevent fields for links, sources, author etc.

It adds up if you think of them as children. Complaining bitterly because their parents are so "mean" and "unfair" but not too happy if mommie and daddie aren't there to bail them out when they get in trouble. Leftists always behave like children.

You're probably right. The Frogs and Krauts need someone else to boss around because they're tired of bossing each other. The Belgians are best at cowering in the corner when the bullies come to town, so they'll climb aboard anyone's bandwagon if they think there's some protection in it for them.

Even though I think the EU is a bad idea for Europe and am delighted that the constitutional talks broke down, I agree, the fat lady probably hasn't sung, yet. Someone will try to pull it back together down the road. It may take two more failed tries before the EU constitution is declared dead.

Your #3 is so right on and people don't realize it.

Worth a repeat.

"Ahh, we'll have to just rebuild them in another decade or so when the Islamics start building training camps in the cities they are taking over as we speak and we need to move the war on terror to the Islam-Euro front."

I do understand why we're getting out of Germany at the present time. However, people are forgetting the biggest infiltration of Islamics is in two places and it is driving them nuts: #1 UK, #2 France.

"2. Why should we care if Germany did decide to liberate territory occupied by France?"

Under the new EU constitution, Germany won't have to occupy land it wants to control. It will have hegemony over other's lands under the boot of the new government. This will give it power to regulate minute details of life in two dozen countries.

What it never accomplished in WWII.

We need bases in the area. Poland would be a great location. As I recall, France denied the US access to their airspace during the Gulf War.

What allies besides Great Britain?

The frogs detest us because we kept them from learning how to speak German, the Germans, frogs and Russians were up to their elbows selling weapons and technology to Hussain who was a barbarious murderer.

What GWB is doing is clearly playing hardball with the "former allies".

" The bottom line is that the US will still have a very large military presence in Germany for years to come."

Don't count on it. The Romanians and Bulgarians initiated discussions last year to entice into some of the large formerly Soviet bases there. Not to mention that shaves an hour off flying time into the Middle East.

The economy hit is only a short hit. Every single base run by the British, the French or Americans in Germany that has closed...came back within five years to make as much money if not more. The only long-term hits have been housing markets in remote sections of Germany where no 'rich' Americans reside and the owners are left to rent at half the price as before.

Do you know if the base in Stuttgart will close or remain open?

That is Patch Barracks-----headquarters for EUCOM.

It isn't going anywhere.

I agree.

I paraphrased an article I read in Germany's "Spiegel" about the EU-Constitution failure for a post in another thread:

FR....Chirac blames Blair as EU constitution talks collapse

Schroeder talks about those countries that negotiate with European integration in mind (i.e., his own Germany) vs. those that negotiate only through national egotism (i.e. Poland).

IMO, Germany/France's new tactic will be to be to represent the 'balkers' as nationalists who promote their own country's interests before European advancement. The justification for a renewed attempt at a EU constitution ratification will be based upon the premise of the necessity of avoiding a fiasco as the one that just occurred.

Reports I've read mention that Berlusconi described the atmosphere at the last meeting as "complete disagreement". I also read that an Euro representative from some Scandavian country said the constitution issue would probably be tabled until early 2005.

It remains to be seen if the issue is resurrected before then due to some crisis that requires rapid handling by all member countries, making the vote distribution issue a hot button item.

Again, JMO.

Unless, you have spent time in Europe, and I mean really spent time, you could not understand to the level Islam is invading their culture.

My son was born in Northern Germany two years ago. I used to go into the city to go to my ob-gyn. Upstairs was the ob-gyn's office, downstairs was a pediaticians's office. Every trip I made there for the entire ten months or so, I saw floods of Muslim women going in to either doctor. I would say at a ratio of about 8 to one.

We had a corrupted and runaway government then and we have the same thing now.

Obviously this is true for the Democrats, Kennedy and Johnson, who got us into the Vietnam War and expanded it, but in no way does it tie into President Bush’s very successful handling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

NVA while sailors pushed copters off carrier decks to make room for the next load of the vanquished. I don't think that we can ever afford to be that "right" again. Just like Iraq will turn out.

You are mistaken about this. We had been out of the country for two years. That team was just geting out the civilian staff at the embassy and it was only a few hueys that went over the side and one of those was blown of the deck. The press made it look much worse. You need to do a little work on the history of Viet Nam. We never lost a battle and did not loose in the field. The Democrats took over the Hill and cut off funding. You are quite wrong in your statements. It is all in the record if you care to look.

And this will most likely be the tipping point in the WOT. YOu should find some non-lib Viet Nam vets that server in the 68 to 71 period, particularly after Abrams took over. Your understanding of Viet Nam is strongly invluenced by leftist propaganda.

Your comment on Nam vs. Iraq:

I don't think that we can ever afford to be that "right" again. Just like Iraq will turn out.

As you were typing this drivel, arete, The DNA of Iraq's captured Ho Chi Minh was being tested.

It is rare that someone writes a post that is already wrong, but with the capture of Saddam yesterday at 8:30 PM Iraq Time, 2:30 PM ET, 11:30AM PT, you've done the near-impossible with your 11:48AM PT post. Congratulations (excuse the momentary gloat).

Gloat done.

Oh, and Nam would have turned out similarly with a Republican president and the ability to refute the lies of the mainstream press we have today.
