Joe Namath Drunk Interview On ESPN's Patriots-Jets Game Saturday Night?

Did anyone see Joe Namath's sideline interview with the female reporter-babe during the second quarter of the Pats-Jets game?

She was asking him about Chad Pennington, and he talked to her like Chad was going to lead them to a championship...of course, the Jets aren't going anywhere now...and his speech was very deliberate and slow.

"He's either drunk or he has some kind of disease", I said to my mate.

The very next question, the woman (I didn't catch her name) asked him about how great it was being a QB as a Jet...and Namath started smiling and leaning around her...she kept her distance as best she could as she held the mic up to Joe.

"I wanna kiss you!" Namath blurted...before he got some more composure, spoke about the team looking forward to next year...then ended with the same line "I really wanna kiss you!" or something like that.

The girl said, "Thank you Joe, I'll take that as a compliment."

The announcers were silent for a second, then one of them said, "Joe is a fun guy..."

Kind of reminded me of the story of Howard Cosell getting sauced in the booth during a Monday Night Football game.

Joe Namath was a great. I don't care how he is ranked. I remember watching him too many times at Alabama football games. Not only was he fast, he was accurate with the football.

Joe knew he was good. But he had his comeuppance with Bear Bryant. I recall Bear Bryant making Joe sit out some major games for disciplinary problems. Alabama won those games that Joe was on the bench.

Joe Namath's best season came in 1967 when he completed 258 passes for 4,007 yards and 26 touchdowns and his knees were held together with tape.

Sorry, he was one of the best to ever play the game.

It's always embarrassing when someone on TV is drunk. Does anyone remember when Burt Parks was drunk on the Miss America Pageant. I think it will be the stuff of legends because I doubt we'll EVER see that on TV again!

For what it is worth, he lives in Jupiter Florida at least part of the time. He has been recognized buying large quantities of rolling papers at local stores.

Namath was a good QB. However, his popularity and notariety are not only because of his football talents. He played in NY, and anyone who is successful in NY (especially before so much of the media moved out) was hyped nationwide. Consider that in 1969, ABC, NBC, and CBS has all their main talent in NY. Plus, Time, Newsweek, all the big-name AP and UPI sportswriters and photographers, plus all the nationally syndicated sportswriters were hqed in NY. There wasn't any alternative media to speak of, so these guys were THE voice of sports, and they all followed and rooted for NY teams.

Second, he signed a $400,000 contract with the Jets. This was the beginning of the big-money athlete. By comparison, I believe Jerry Kramer, who was an all-pro, made something like $17,000 during the 1967 season, when the Pack won the SB. Seriously, Kramer made more money off his book, Instant Replay, than he made off the Green Bay Packers. BTW, the NFL team that had the rights to Namath were the St. Louis Cardinals.

Third, his Super Bowl victory over the Jets was undoubtedly the biggest upset in the history of the NFL. It changed the entire NFL situation.

Finally, Namath was the first undeniably succesful "new generation" player. He rocked the boat in the league. It seems strange now, but Namath was the first player to wear white shoes. it looked funny to see him out there in the mud of Shea stadium, looking like he was in his socks with no shoes on. His hair stuck out from under his helmet, which nobody ever did before. He came into a flat-topped league with a hippie attitude. Madison Avenue loved him because he'd do stuff like the pantyhose commercial.

None of the other stuff would have mattered, if Namath hadn't been able to play football. Head to head, Daryl Lamonica and the Raiders used to regularly whip Joe Willie and the Jets. However, Lamonica never won THE game. Namath did. The Jets turned the Super Bowl from a game with all the relevence of the pro bowl (the first one didn't even sell out) into the biggest sports event in the world. The Chiefs probably would have done it the next year, but the Jets did it one year sooner. Who was the second man on the moon?

Many athletes careers are summed up in one afternoon. Dwight Clark and "the Catch". Jackie Smith laying on his back after dropping a sure touchdown in the Super Bowl. For Joe Namath, it was running off the field after the Super Bowl with that #1 gesture, which is copied to this day.

I'm sure I could did up some 1 yr stats that are better than his and alot that are comparable.

However, you miss the point - greatness has to withstand the test of time.

Will Terrell Davis go down as one of the best ever running backs? NO. Why - career too short...yes he was one of the best when he played and THE best for a 2-3 yr span, but 20 yrs from now you won't find him mentioned in the same breath as Simpson, Payton, Brown, and Sanders.

We all know that if a white guy like Joe who played ball for Bama back in the early 60s is still a hero to many, then the multi culti PC police at ESPN just HAVE to find a way to discredit and embarrass him for all time. You could remember all that and yet leave out the commercial where he wore panty hose? And what about that movie with Ann-Margaret?
