Joe Namath Drunk Interview On ESPN's Patriots-Jets Game Saturday Night?
ESPN ^

Posted on 12/20/2003 7:02:57 PM PST by Recovering_Democrat

Did anyone see Joe Namath's sideline interview with the female reporter-babe during the second quarter of the Pats-Jets game?

She was asking him about Chad Pennington, and he talked to her like Chad was going to lead them to a championship...of course, the Jets aren't going anywhere now...and his speech was very deliberate and slow.

"He's either drunk or he has some kind of disease", I said to my mate.

The very next question, the woman (I didn't catch her name) asked him about how great it was being a QB as a Jet...and Namath started smiling and leaning around her...she kept her distance as best she could as she held the mic up to Joe.

"I wanna kiss you!" Namath blurted...before he got some more composure, spoke about the team looking forward to next year...then ended with the same line "I really wanna kiss you!" or something like that.

The girl said, "Thank you Joe, I'll take that as a compliment."

The announcers were silent for a second, then one of them said, "Joe is a fun guy..."

Kind of reminded me of the story of Howard Cosell getting sauced in the booth during a Monday Night Football game.

Just got tired of typing. I'm not the best at it, especially since I'm sober right now. And yea, I remember the pantyhose commercial and vaguely remember the Ann Margaret movie. It was just a regular thang for Joe to have a good lookin babe around in some capacity or other. I think he played a cameo role in that movie "Midnight Cowboy" also. Remember when Bama lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl when Tommy Nobis stopped Joe on a sneak at the goal line. They tried to give Joe the MVP trophy for the game and he refused it because they lost?

I saw it too...
Reminds me of what happened when NBC was airing the final episode of "Cheers" and they had the "Cheers" actors
right afterwards, live from Boston's Bull and Finch Pub
(the bar that inspired the show). They were all sloshed!
Great idea, have them getting sauced all night and turn
the (hic!) camera on them.

Speaking of being sloshed in public, Hank Williams Jr. once got up on stage drunk; kept forgetting lyrics, and was rambling incoherently. He swore at the audience and
ended the show quickly, as they booed.

His tour sponsor...Budweiser...was not pleased :)

I will read out of respect for a former QB who got lucky, and made his prediction come true.

It did though put the AFL on the map.

I acknowledge that his stats are not that great. But when I was about 12 or 13 years old watching that guy back in the 1960's he was great. That why I still think of him fondly. In his prime I would put him up against anyone and I mean anyone today.
I would imagine that he still is in a great deal of pain every damn day. So cut him a little slack. He's paid his dues and then some.

I had heard the same thing. Several months ago someone told me he was in pretty bad shape--Mickey Mantle bad shape.

Although no one is responsible for Broadway Joe's current shape but Joe, I can't help but feel sad at the downward spiral of the man so many women my age simply drooooooled over.

God, I loved that man when I was in high school. My first item on my Christmas list one year was the "I Can't Wait Until Tomorrow...." book. Got it, too.

I'm a little drunk tonight too. It's good that nobody wants to talk to me.

I have just polished off the bottle (minus my wife's small glass) of 1998 Lolonis Orpheus Petite Syrah that we opened with dinner. I, too, am pleasantly drunk. I salute you.

Thats the way I feel exactly.

Its one of those "ya had to have been there" thing's. The guys got his opinion and he's welcome to it.

I don't know about him being in such bad shape. He is currently trying to complete his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama via a distance education program. I haven't heard how far along he is in the program, but I'm sure we'll hear about it if/when he does graduate.

I do hope what I heard was exaggerated--it was a friend of a friend type thing. At any rate, those pictures still make me weak kneeded. I wish him the best.

I don't know whether to rejoice over that they've won 11 straight, have defeated every team with a winning record that has come their way, have the NFL's best record and are in great position to clinch home field advantage in the playoffs, which is important because they're 7-0 at home, or to collapse from heart failure over all these close wins.

I'm also a Red Sox fan, so I'm not used to so many positives to look at and often look on the downside.

I really think yall are being too harsh on Suzy. She may not be a supermodel, but she's way above average. I think she's very attractive.

I recently read that he's almost finished. He only has one or two courses left.

We should be proud of him for finishing.

I've never been dazzled by Joe Namath, but I'm a Bama gal. I recently met the sister of someone who attended a class with Broadway Joe this past year, and they were both thrilled that the sis got to meet Joe Willie. They did not mention anything about him seeming unhealthy, and I think they would have. But, who knows . . .
