[history]
President Bush today is expected to propose an expansive new immigration policy. It is a mistake. And the Congress should consider it dead on arrival.
The Bush plan, another in a long line of administration political panders, conveniently comes in advance of next week's Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico.

Remember, when Congress in a bipartisan fashion declared Nixon's expensive "welfare-reform" plan dead on arrival. No such possibility with this immigration giveaway, I fear.

what can we do to stop this? It smacks of payoff, blackmail, insanity, and/or treason.
Bush will be losing votes and he doesn't seem to care. Many conservatives will stay at home or switch to third party and they were the ones who helped him get elected.

Seems like this a part of a much larger re-election plan. There will be no way to stop this legislation.
To: Willie Green
No stopping it at the executive level. I'll bet the legislative has a voice vote. Nothing this government won't do to promote socialism.

what can we do to stop this? It smacks of payoff, blackmail, insanity, and/or treason. Some say it's linked to a move to "privitize" the Mexican oil industry. Of course that will first be denied, then when it's a done deal, be spun as a victory for "conservatism".

Yeah, it's just as stupid as the "read my lips, no new taxes" pronouncement....it must be some kind of Bush family tradition to do whatever it takes to commit political hari-kari in an election year.

Good to want to have reform. But the language of this one already tells me that it will turn into another massive amnesty program - unfair to US citizens, unfair to those who try to emmigrate by the rules.

I just sent an E-mail to the White House expressing my displeasure with GWB's policy on illegal immigration.
Maybed he will realize he will lose more votes than he will gain by this ridulous decision.

Man came on Michael Savage's program last night and stated, as a point of contention, that Irish, Italian, etc. immigrants of the 19th century would be considered illegals if they faced current immigration rules.
False argument correction: 19th Century did not have SS, Medicare, Free College, Fed. Food Stamp, free hospitazlization, plus all other programs offered by state and local gov't.. In other words, immigrants of 19th century would bankrupt economy instantly if social architects (aka socialists/communists) lived and controlled power back then.
This is an absolutely illegal act! This is an absolutely insane policy that will destroy America. BTW, illegals can underbid anyone and still walk away with a better profit than legals.

Look, all this is just a great political move by GWB to enforce his "Compassionate Conservativatism", which helped him win the first time. He knows that the Republican controlled congress will vote it down just like they did CFR, but he'll still be able to use it, as an issue for the hispanic vote, during the election.
Um...wait...didn't?????
To: american spirit
Yeah, it's just as stupid as the "read my lips, no new taxes" pronouncementGeorge Sr. apparently held out immigration reform as a carrot to get Carlos Salinas de Gortari to sign on to the NAFTA treaty, so W is now carrying out his daddy's word.
To: Pa' fuera
You might be right although I'd have a hard time with us honoring any commitments to that crook who was forced to flee Mexico after they discovered him looting the treasury among other misdeeds.
