Pakistani officials confirm death of Canadian linked to al-Qaeda Last Updated Sat, 24 Jan 2004 14:07:52 ISLAMABAD - DNA testing has confirmed earlier reports that Canadian Ahmed Said Khadr, a suspected al-Qaeda, is dead, according to reports.

Pakistani officials confirmed Friday that Khadr was killed in a shootout with Pakistani security forces near the Afghanistan border three months ago, the National Post said.

Earlier reports suggested both Khadr and his 14-year-old son Abdul Karim were killed in the raid. But Pakistani officials said only the teenager was killed.

Now Pakistani authorities say Abdul Karim was wounded in the same shootout as his father and is currently in custody.

Khadr, who called himself a Canadian aid worker, was wanted for his suspected ties to Osama Bin Laden.

In 1996, Khadr was arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of financing the bombing of the Egyptian Embassy in Islamabad. His arrest, which coincided with a "Team Canada" trade visit, was raised by former prime minister Jean Chrétien with the Pakistani prime minister.

Khadr was released a short time later.

He was born in Egypt but moved to Ottawa in 1975 where he studied computers.

BACKGROUNDER: Abdurahman Khadr

Khadr's 20-year-old son Abdurahman, a Canadian citizen, made headlines recently when he was dumped in Afghanistan after being released from a U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

From Afghanistan, he went to Iran and then to Bosnia, where Canadian officials helped him return to Canada last month.

From Afghanistan, he went to Iran and then to Bosnia, where Canadian officials helped him return to Canada last month.

No doubt with some newly-learned techniques...

This guy is a founding member of al-Qaeda who's been with the group since its inception 1989 and has served as a major moneyman, communications expert, and all around mean guy. He's on the top 20 list, so let's break open a bottle of e-champagne in celebration!

Goes to show that we are fighting a different war this time around, borders are not binding our enemies!

Picking and choosing enemies on an individual basis rather than a national basis is a very formidable task to say the least.

Confirmed DNA? Okay, I guess I'll take a sip of champagne. But this dude seems (seemed?) to have nine lives.

Lets hope that he didn't die before talking a lot to clear his conscience.

Sounds like a great hit for our side.
