A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

There is something truly romantic about searching for sunken treasure in the depths of the ocean. The Atlantic seaboard contains the wrecks of many a Spanish galleon sunk by adverse weather in the midst of traveling back and forth from Europe to the New World. Some of these ships were laden with treasures beyond the wildest imaginations.
It is the hopes of recovering these treasures from the murky depths that entices many skilled divers to try their luck. One of the largest names in sunken treasure recovery, Mel Fisher, lost one of his sons in a diving accident. The dangers are known up front, but that doesn't stop the serious determination to find riches that will make one wealthy for life.
Kip Wagner, a builder from Miamisburg OH, decided to relocate to a largely uninhabited place on the east coast of Florida named Wabasso. While growing his business, he came into contact with a local physician from the village of Sebastian named Dr, Kip Kelso. Prior to partnering with Dr. Kelso, Wagner had discovered some flat, black "rocks" on the beach at Wabasso that were great fun to skip back out over the surf.
In relating this story one day to a business partner of his, Steadman Parker, Parker took great delight in telling Wagner that he was probably returning badly tarnished pieces of eight back to the ocean that had washed up during a storm. Wagner and Kelso eventually partnered to try to scientifically recover Spanish pieces of eight from off the coast of Wabasso Beach.
In the late 1950's, Wagner found treasure buried on the beach near a fresh water well that Dr. Kelso had found out about by researching the history of the area. Shortly after, Wagner got together a dive team and recovered silver ingots, cannons and other items from a sunken vessel off the coast of Wabasso Beach. Today, there is a museum close to the site on A1A that is open to visitors.
Mel Fisher and the two Kips from Wabasso and Sebastian are only three of many men and women who have worked hard over the years to recover treasure from ships that sank off the coast of Florida. For them, it is a childhood pirate's dream of vast riches come true.

Caring Prayer
Read: Romans 15:30-33
I beg you, . . . strive together with me in prayers to God for me. Romans 15:30
Bible In One Year: Exodus 19-20; Matthew 18:21-35
I recently received an e-mail from someone I didn't know. It was from a teenager who set a great example we all can learn from. His e-mail showed how much he believed in the power of prayer.
He told about a teenage girl in his hometown who had become pregnant outside of marriage. Her parents were threatening to force her to get an abortion. When the young man heard about it, he got on his computer and sent an e-mail to more than 100 people, telling of the girl's predicament and saying over and over, "Please pray for this girl." His compassion for her was evidentas well as his faith in God to answer prayer.
This teenager could have spent time on his computer doing many other things: looking up information about cars, playing video games, sending jokes to his buddies. Instead, he took the time to compile all those e-mail addresses, then he wrote a caring, heartfelt note. In Romans 15:30-33, the apostle Paul showed that he knew the value of concerted prayerwhether it's for ourselves or for someone else in need.
What a lesson! It reminds us to cling to the Lord in prayer, and it shows us an example of the compassion that leads us to team up with others in caring prayer. Dave Branon
As we attempt to live like Christ
In actions, words, and deeds,
We'll follow His design for prayer
And pray for others' needs. Branon
When you can't be there, you can help through prayer.

Now, more than ever, we are called to prayer for the safety and protection of our troops and the continued morality and guidance from our President. We also must pray for his protection against his attackers and detractors.

Ah, good morning, dansy and Dan..:))
The area of Florida you describe here was 'my turf' from age 9 1/2 to 18; and several more years as an adult.
Yes, I was indeed steeped in the stories of Spanish galleons succumbing to the vagaries of the ocean along that stretch, as well as of pirates who chose it to bury loot.
One always kept an eye out for treasures awash on the sands.
Sadly, while engorging all manner of beutiful shells and interesting driftwood, for me it yielded mostly gum and candy wrappers and pop tops from metal cans..:))
This kind of scene, however, lasts a lifetime in lovely memories...

In fact, I had invested in a *really* cheap metal detector at one point and only uncovered the same manner of bounty as you.
But, it was fun to dream.....

Florida's Fabulous Treasures
By Jeffrey Kramer
Many researchers and historians claim that Florida contains more buried and sunken treasures than any other state. They have also put a price tag on these treasures, which amounts to a cool $165 million (1964).
Florida, like all other states, has a fascinating and romantic history. Seven different flags have flown over her, not to mention the black flag of the pirates. Florida became the haven of many notorious pirates, including Blackbeard, Lafitte, Gasparilla, Kidd, Rackham, Bowlegs, Bonnett, and possibly even Morgan himself.
They roamed the waters of the Caribbean Sea, and captured every ship in sight. Often, they brought their loot back to Florida, and buried it on some lonely shore. When they finally died, the location of their hidden wealth died with them. The majority of all buried treasure in Florida is the work of pirates.
Numerous wars have been fought in Florida and upon the waters around her. Men hastily buried their wealth when being pursued by the enemy. Valuables were lost or misplaced when the fighting started and were never found again. Naval battles accounted for the sinking of many ships with valuable cargoes, their resting-place to be forgotten in time. Some very valuable treasures were lost during the many wars in Florida.
Florida has survived through dozens of hurricanes in the past four centuries, but many ships around her have not. From the year 1500 to 1960, hurricanes have sunk their quota of treasure-laden ships. These wrecked ships represent all nations, but the majority of them are Spanish galleons. They carried gold and silver from the New World to the Old, only to have their contents deposited on some jagged reef off Florida. Many gold doubloons and pieces-of-eight are awaiting a lucky finder on the Florida reefs.
Actually, there are two types of treasure hunting; buried treasure merely requires a shovel, but it is advisable to use a metal detector if success is to be achieved. Hunting sunken treasure becomes more expensive and complicated. Diving gear is needed and of course a boat is required. Only an experienced diver should go after sunken treasure. Luckily, Florida contains both types of treasures, thus enabling the prospective hunter to choose from a larger variety.
Florida has already yielded hundreds of lost treasures to many happy people. Among these are: A chest containing $25,000 in Mexican gold was found on Grassy Key. Miami has yielded some buried treasure.
A road crew while building a new road near Cocoa found thirteen chests of treasure.
$70,000 was discovered on Lower Matecumbe Key, plus another 61 gold pieces that were found by fishermen there. Dozens of pirate caches have been found on the West Coast of Florida. Millions of dollars have already been salvaged from the Spanish galleons off Florida. Some of these sunken treasures can be seen at Art McKees Sunken Treasure Museum on Plantation Key. This is only a small sample of what has been unearthed and salvaged in Florida.
