A parent posts an article sharing a touching moment of the daughter's interaction with the President of the United States of America and the next post is your sour note.

There are many threads to ventilate on and rail against Bush..I could ping you to them.

You chose this one and it tells me a lot.

The problem is higher expectations, created by us Baby Booomers. My parents didn't expect heath care to be paid, and did not expect to live long enough to be retired for 20+ years. Just like we expect enough electricity for our luxuries: numerous TVs in the house, A/C (which none of us had as kids); numerous phones and cell phones, 3 baths, etc. Once you take these things as normal, then others feel they have to have more.

The reason we have Affirmative Action, is because there was overt discrimination in the past. I don't like Affirmative Action, but when the private sector does not do what is right, then we allow government to take over.

I am an optimist that we can have enough economic growth to cover these costs, but you cannot turn back this tide without reform.

To Bush's credit, he is the only President I know of to try and reform Medicare and Social Security. That was always considered to be the third rail of politics - do not touch or be destroyed. The same with immigration reform. Everyone criticizes his ideas, but no one else comes up with any alternative suggestions.

This is the difference with true leaders. They take on the criticism when they do what they think is the right thing. Or you can have a Kerry, Edwards or Clinton, who will do nothing until the polls tell them they have to do something. Take your pick.

Me, I'll pick Bush any day over them.

You know, I don't hit the abuse button very often, but I'm going to now. I wouldn't so much have mined your first comment, though it was pretty tacky given the thread, but your trying to turn this into relentless Bush-bashing is truly tiresome.

"The problem is higher expectations, created by us Baby Booomers."

And the problem will be made worse as, if your generalization is correct, they will heartily reject any attempts at reform in order to "get theirs." They vote and the politicans will pay attention to the detriment of others.

Agreed. However the "reforms" in Medicare are miniscule, we're still waiting to see what the details of his plan are regarding S.S. and no there WERE other plans to deal with the illegal immigration issue. He chose a VERY poor one.

By all means do so. I have not flamed anyone, my responses have been civil and you have that right. The mods are decent enough to know the difference between abuse and your unfounded irritation.

All right, tell me what president took on immigration reform? Unless you mean Clinton, who allowed so many into the coutry in 1996 from Haiti so they could vote for him

Those "free" pills, Medicare, S.S. and all the other govt. bennies are going to have to be paid. Guess what age group is going to shell out the most?

Oh hell .. why don't we all hold hands and take a walk in in the middle of I-95 ... I mean what's the point of living since we're all DOOMED!

You're going to have all your future paychecks ripped to shreds when you grow up to pay for his "compassion." Ignorance, and thus youth, is bliss.

You should have finished it up with one of those Howard Dean screeches

No my point was that Bush's PLAN to deal with the illegal immigration problem is a very poor one. While its laudable that he is facing the important issue, the route he's taking will cause more harm than good.

If you think the irritation is unfounded, you are without the recognition that this was a thread to share joy of a parent about a child's rare evening.

There are none so blind as he whose agenda is an obsession that precludes celebrating a good thing.

You sure irritated me.

My point is, he takes risks as President. This is another third rail he is touching. Again, I hear criticism from you, Rush, Hannity, etc., but no other alternatives from these guys except - put troops on the border and keep everyone out.

I don't think that will work either.

I am not amazed, but I have read enough to know that communism permeates many "good causes"....or at least legtimate groups. It certainly has infiltrated the anti war or peace movements here.

...far more charming in person than on TV, has a natural twinkle in his eye, and was looking directly at her during his speech (she was in the front row) and winked at her at one point

I've seen him in person twice (although not in the front row) and your daughter is absolutely correct in her assessment. One of my friends was kissed on the cheek by Bush, and she didn't want to wash her face! (She's over 65 -- so Cloud 9 is not confined to the teenagers).

My favorite story about a Bush campaign stop was reported right here on FR after one of his appearances in Milwaukee during 2000 when we gave him a highly spirited welcome. A FReeper reported that he/she was outside the auditorium when Bush came out with the SS and he gave a little jump and a high five to the Milwaukee police and a "Yeeee-hah" Texas yell before he was whisked away in the limo.

The last time I saw him (about 4 months ago) he stayed and signed tickets after his speech for about 45 minutes -- it was a free appearance. No millions of $$$ collected at that speech. Bush is the MAN! I just love him.

actually Sabertooth put together a very reasonable, legitimate and workable alternative to Amnesty. You can read about it on this thread.

As in Bill and Hillary Clinton and so many others.

S.S. had a much better worker to payee ratio 50 years ago.

That's because Roe v. Wade hadn't killed 40,000,000 innocent babies 50 years ago. A wise person on this board once pointed out that after WWI killed 17% of the French, the country declined and ceased to be a world power. Roe has taken 25% of our population -- and it's worse because it is the very young -- human beings who would have had a lifespan ahead of them of 60-80 years. The population who are supposed to support the retirees of SS are already 25% dead, thanks to the liberals on the Supreme Court.
