When Did Rush Limbaugh Become Defensive (and in so doing become boring)?

Perhaps it's just me, but I've seen a recent descent by Rush Limbaugh into defensiveness, petulance, high volume, and lack of fun. I started listening to Rush primarily for the entertainment value: he was the laughing guy giving Liberals the death of a thousand cuts as he threw those little spears bull fighters use into the Liberal Bull until it collapsed, exhausted and bleeding. There was parody, laughter, sharp politcial observation, laughter, and general fun.
This seems all behind us now. Rush sounds, most days, petulant, whiney, and definitely not fun. He seems to complain for three hours each day, or rage against the LIberals. Raging against anyone is a turn-off. He grew his audience by laughing at his politcial opponents.
Am I off base, or has something changed? Has the trumped-up drug charge so bruised him he has lost his sense of fun and sense of proportion? His voice is a critical component for conservatives in this election year.

This is typical for Rush in an election year. He gets more shrill and, yes, sometimes more hysterical.

Just you!! I suggest you turn your radio dial to Bill O'Reilly. He sounds like he's your speed.

He's back to where he was technique-wise, but I've noticed that the range of topics he'll discuss has appreciably shrunk.
I get the impression that he avoids criticizing any group with a history of fighting back homosexuals and Muslims being notable examples like the plague.

Did you listen to his conversation with Rose yesterday?
To: pabianice
I've noticed what you have, but it's only been since Friday. He's temporarily lost the optimism.
Have no fear it'll come back. He should run some more parodies and mock PSA's, that seems to get himself and everyone else fired up.
In fact, he needs to dust off the Crouching Democrat Hidden Agenda from the archives. Ever heard that one? It would totally resonate at this particular time of media frenzy.
Were you really looking for feedback on this one or were you just checking to see if his staff would see this?
To: pabianice
Maybe he could do something really interesting, like exposing his naked breast.

Need a bumper sticker that says, "Moby is a dick" next to his picture.

I think he's been pretty good. The woman "Rose" yesterday was phenomenal. It's a news driven show, and right now the NEWS is boring . . . Kerry, Kerry, Kerry.

I think you are way off base. He's better than ever in my book.
To: pabianice
Must be you. I'm listening to Rush right now and I'm a happy camper.

Perhaps it's just meYes, it's you.
Periodic replay of Rush's programs from years back (up to 13 yrs back) doesn't show a significant 'shift' as you attempt to convey.
One day, you will be able to verify this yourself ...

I was listening to Rose and couldn't help but think that she was a long, lost sister of Ann Coulter.
I agree - she was phenomenal.
To: pabianice
I totally agree.

The lockbox episode was insulting and insufferable. Not one thing funny about it.
