Hey, Freepers: I don't know who PhotoShopped that fake "2nd photo" of Kerry and Fonda at the antiwar rally, but you should know that you came within AN EYELASH of causing a huge embarassment.
Thank goodness Raoul made a phone call, so Kristinn just got a call from somebody who is a longtime press friend of FR who was about to go nationwide with the "2nd photo" story. You've got no idea how close this was to being a train wreck.
I am told NewsMax actually got suckered on this.
The same veterans who had circulated the original Fonda-Kerry photo apparently got hold of the PhotoShop fake and didn't know it was a joke. So when these veterans contacted the press Thursday morning claiming to have a second photo -- man! A lot of valuable time was wasted as reporters contacted Associated Press trying to verify the existence of this fake photo.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful with this kind of stuff.

"I am sorry you are not aware of that."
Please don't concern yourself with my awareness. You happen to be pretending to be an expert in my own field. I have dealt with those issues professionally for about forty years.

And there's that fake photo of Daschle pledging allegiance wrong that still shows up.

I knew it looked weird and suspiciously inauthentic as soon as I saw it. Maybe that's why Registered didn't feel bad about it.

We should have a rule here that political humor posts have "HUMOR:" preceding the title.

Ok then you know that half the country takes CBS NBC ABC and CNN as gospel truth with your 40 years of experience.
The new media is helpful however it can be a detriment as seen in the original post of this thread.
The old media is slowly being forced to change but stuff like this enables them to continue mocking us with conspiracy theories etc.

OK doctor. It is clear to me that you aren't in need of any further education on this matter, and I suspect that includes other matters as well.

I just wanted to thank all of you for understanding the seriousness of how we can discredit ourselves and in doing so help the left. So many here do such incredible work and it would be just awful to be discredited by something like this.
For all the good we do there is always someone ready to give us a bad name and it has happened before.
Here are some of your comments on this serious matter: when the REAL proof turns up they claim "just another fake, like last time".
People need to be more responsible. It's one thing if the photo is obviously a joke but this one looked authentic. Apparently, it fooled a lot of folks. This will not earn the conservative cause any points...
Flooding the internet with fake photos would be a great way to discredit the real one. I hope that people can restrain themselves
We don't need a bunch of fakes muddying the waters and confusing the issue. The Kerry campaign would latch onto it in a heartbeat to discredit the legitimate stuff.
Otherwise Free Republic is going to get a reputation of posting nothing but fake pictures and we will lose much of our credibility
If we want to maintain a level of respect by the media, we need to self-police things like this, and save the other catty stuff for less important threads
We've hurt ourselves more than helped over the years, with over the top allegations, wishful thinking, and let's face it, made up crap on the Clinton's. They've brilliantly used our own exhuberance against us, made us unbelievable, and even, at times, a laughingstock.
A good reputation is priceless in this town; sometimes it takes a lot of work to keep that rep spotless. Thank goodness that Doctor Raoul and Kristinn were on-the-ball with this, and were able to mitigate the damage that could have been done. Madstrider's absolutely correct, we did come within and eyelash of causing a huge embarrassment - in a lot of places.
I don't know why anyone would use a fake purposely and hurt Free Republic's reputation.
Now, if someone is planting disinformation in the form of photos, is it possible that 'they' are also planting faked stories (RE. The Drudge affair story).
Let's remain smarter than the average donkey.
(and now a comment from me) And as for you Billhilly, if you don't understand how easily FR can be discredit at this critical time I don't know what to tell you. A lot of us have worked long and hard to make FR credible and the leftist media is constantly looking for a way to discredit us. Surely you know this with your 40 years of experience. Jim: I really think you need to address this matter.

Dead Kennedys pic?
To: kristinn
When Registered first posted it and implied that it was real, lots of us wanted to believe that the photo was real. But we noticed that Registered did not source the photo. I guess we need to make sure we know the original source of a photo before using it.
It was suppose to be an AP photo taken at some event and should have been easily sourced by the poster, if it was real.
PS. I love all your DC protest reports through the years.
To: GraniteStateConservative
Although the photo was doctored and thus unfair to pass around as real, it sure shows something about Kerrys character that so many, including news organizations would readily believe it.

Thanks. I see she's taken it off. She has a very nice blog. She's doing a good thing.

I see a lot of people making public and personal accusations about a FReeper who has not been banned, that he did this image deliberately to discredit the site. In my opinion, if Registered did this to hurt FR, he wouldn't be a FReeper anymore, would he?
I doubt the people attacking Registered would be convinced by an explanation, since people who want to believe the worst will do it anyway, but it seems to me that they should be convinced by the fact that he hasn't been banned. Jim Robinson WILL ban someone who deliberately harms the site! Registered has not been banned, ergo...JR believes this was not a malicious act.
The personal attacks about this should be answered and stopped.

This is the rat m.o. They put out red herrings in order to throw doubt on the real thing.

Which is certainly good enough for me--and ought to be good enough for everybody who is a guest on this site. Registered has given us a lot of good shadenfreude over the years. If JR is gonna stick with him, then we all should. Registered, thanks for doing it. It may not have worked out as you hoped but I personally was exceedingly pleased by it because even if it's faked it's TRUE!
