April 29, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The vast majority of the United Nations' oil-for-food contracts in Iraq have mysteriously vanished, crippling investigators trying to uncover fraud in the program, a government report charged yesterday. The General Accounting Office report, presented at a congressional hearing into the scandal-plagued program, determined that 80 percent of U.N. records had not been turned over.

Unfortunately, yes. The UN's Teflon is amazing. They loot the world, spread corruption that makes WorldCom, etc. look like pikers, and the result - Bush desperately trying to turn responsibility for the new Iraqi government over to the UN.

"The vast majority of the United Nations' oil-for-food contracts in Iraq have mysteriously vanished..."

No doubt someone left them lying near one of the shredders, and accidentally knocked them in--before it could be shut off, all of them had been shredded. Yeahhh, that's the ticket...

My contempt for the UN knows no bounds, and I have as little use for it as anyone. And, I think telling it to move out of the US is probably a good idea.

However, the US should not give up its membership. By our position in the Security Council, we have the ability to veto a good deal of mendacious bullsh*t. Remember, when the Russians walked out during the Korean conflict, we were able to pass resolutions we otherwise would not have. Same thing now, even if we ignore the UN, it can do us damage. Better to be in the tent, vetoing left and right, than to have them actually passing anti-American and anti-Israeli resolutions that some bozo might actually think he should try to enforce.

Harry Canyon: The U.N. Building. What a joke! They turned it into low rent housing. It's a dump.

I'm fuming too and these white collar crooks should be purged from the country ASAP. The UN HQ can then be turned into a homeless shelter, etc.

A friend of mine related a story from when he work on database software in a Swiss bank. The software had been in use for years and did interest and currency calculations. He found errors in the calculations, and duly reported them. He was told "don't worry about that - nobody has ever complained". He did however, go in and fix them so that they were correct.

Wonder if the reason the American Left is so vehement about Iraq is because they were getting a piece of the action, too? ;-)
