Evening all…
I just found out that someone was killed two weeks ago in a car wreck in California.
His name was Corey; he was 28 years old; he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.
In 1979 my family moved into the house my mother still owns. Among the neighbors, across lots (one walked through our backyard and theirs to get to their back door) are an elderly couple who have lived there all their lives, raised their children there, and frequently baby-sat two of their grandchildren. We befriended this couple and, by extension, their grandkids, who were 7 and 3, a girl and a boy. The boy was Corey.
Over the next several years I occasionally sub-babysat Corey, enduring Scooby Doo and The Dukes of Hazzard when I couldn’t get him out of the house, and taking him along on my treks to the post office when I went to get the mail.
I saw him once more after I left home in 1985; I came back on leave from Fort Bragg in 1989, and wanted to take my dad out in my new car; Corey was at his grandparents’, and we picked him up and took him along. He was 13 then.
I never saw him again, though my mother did.
In spite of having seen him in ’89, the first thought I have when I think of him comes from a photo I took in the summer of 1983, just after I graduated high school; a sturdy little fellow of 7, standing in his grandparents’ yard, a doghouse and some country woods in the background.
To all and sundry: Wear Your Damned Seat Belts!
I’m thinking of scripting a PSA in support of Michigan’s "Click it or Ticket" campaign. The tagline would be "If you get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, be glad it’s the worst you got. You could die, and that would hurt more people you can readily count." Or words to that effect.
I can't think of anything else useful to say, so I end this post. I hope it does some good.
I am all for wearing seat belts but I don't want the government forcing me to do it.
To enforce this, a camera should be installed in the kitchen of every home. Until them, police should have "no knock" enforcement privileges.
Educate people all you want about wearing seat belts, insurance companies can charge more for those who don't...but this is NOT a legislative issue. If we encourage government to enact laws that force an individual to protect himself we will soon lose all liberty.

Uh oh--watch out. You're about to incur the wrath of the people here who are thrilled to exercise their god-given right to act as stupid as they can in the face of evidence that shows what they are doing is a monumental act of ignorance.

People who don't wear seatbelts are about as smart as motorcyclists who don't wear helmets or soldiers who don't want body armor.
Folks who don't want to wear seatbelts while driving on the public roads should build their own roads.
Exactly. Keeping people from doing stupid things to themselves is not the proper function of government in a free society.
Screw the government; tell people to wear seatbelts if you wish. If they don't, they don't. Don't advocate that parasites profit from a dumb decision.
Everything that is good should be the law. Right?
That being said, you can only convince so many people. I have a young relative who has received two speeding tickets, a no-seat belt ticket, and has damaged the car three times, in one year. I am going to hate to be around when he gets another speeding ticket, or worse, gets into a drunk driving accident. It's like "Cool Hand Luke." You just can't reach some people.

I had the honor of pumping the chest of a motor cycle riding kid who flew head first into an auto making a legal left turn. His skull was shattered like an egg shell. The only reason he wasn't killed was HE WAS WEARING A MOTORCYCLE HELMET!

A human body propelled from an uncontrolled vehicle is also a potentially deadly missile to other drivers and passers-by. The danger is not merely to onesself.
Seat belts in the kitchen? DON"T BE SILLY.
But we do need protection from all those sharp knives, boiling hot water, and high heat stove tops.
Lets see what we should require:
1) Steel toed shoes - so you don't hurt a toe if you drop a pan.
2) Hair nets - don't want no hair in our food. Mom could be a bio-hazard.
3) Laytex gloves - Dad may have bad hygene, so we should require everyone to wear laytex gloves when preparing food.
4) Kevlar gloves - Got to protect you from cutting a finger off.
5) Operating procedures - All food devices must have written operating procedures.
