Laugh-In

Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In was one of TV's classics, one of those rare programs which was not only an overnight sensation, but was highly innovative, created a raft of new stars, and started trends in comedy which other programs would follow. Laugh-In crystallized a kind of contemporary, fast-paced, unstructured comedy "happening" that was exactly
what an agitated America wanted in 1968.

Laugh-In was first seen as a one-time special on September 9, 1967. It was such an enormous hit that it inevitably led to a series. Its lightning-fast pace took full advantage of the technical capabilities of television and video tape. Blackouts, sketches, one-liners, and cameo appearances by famous show- business celebrities and even national politicians
were all edited into a frenetic whole. The regular cast was large and the turnover high, and of the 40 regulars who appeared in the series only four were in it from beginning to end, the two hosts, announcer Gary Owens, and Ruth Buzzi.

How may I be of assistance?

The essence of Laugh-In was shtick, a comic routine or trademark repeated over and over until it was closely associated with a performer. People love it, come to expect it, and talk about it the next morning after the show. All great comedians have at least one,
but what was remarkable about Laugh-In was that it developed a whole repertoire of sight gags and catchphrases using little-known talent exclusively (though some of them became quite famous later). Among the favorites: Arte Johnson as the German Soldier,
peering out from behind a potted palm murmuring, "Verrry interesting!"; Ruth Buzzi as Gladys, the little old lady with the hand bag, forever whacking the equally decrepit Tyrone who snuggled up beside her on a park bench; Lily Tomlin as the sarcastic, nasal telephone
operator named Ernestine; Gary Owens as the outrageously over modulated announcer, facing the microphone, hand cupped over ear; Alan Sues as the grinning moron of a
sports announcer; Goldie Hawn, as the giggling dumb blonde; Lily Tomlin as Edith Anne, a child philosopher whose catchphrase was "and that's the truth," and so on.

PROGRAMMING HISTORY    124 Episodes
NBC
January l968-May 1973                        Monday 8:00-9:00

  • Shortly after the beginning of the show was a scene called The Party, with all cast members dancing in a swinging 1960s party atmosphere, in between delivering one and two line jokes.
  • Arte Johnson portrayed a number of recurring characters, including:
    • The Nazi soldier, commenting on the previous gag by saying Verrry Interesting sometimes with additional comments.
    • The Dirty Old Man, coming on to Ruth Buzzi (dressed as an extremely drab old lady) seated on a park bench, who inevitably hit him with her purse.
    • The Eastern European Man, who stood stiffly and nervously in an ill fitting suit while commenting on differences between America and "The Old Country", such as "Here in America, is very good, everyone watch television. In Old Country, television watches you!". This predated a similar schtick by Yakov Smirnoff.
    • The Indian Guru, dressed in a Nehru jacket dispensing pseudo-Mystical Eastern Wisdom laden with bad puns.
  • A man in a yellow raincoat riding a tricycle and crashing.
  • The Farkle Family, all but one of whose first names began with "F", and all of whom had flaming red hair and freckles, except for the father; the father of the family next door (Ferd Berfle) also had flaming red hair and freckles.
  • The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate award noting dubious achievements by the government of famous people.

  • Judy Carne was often tricked into saying "sock it to me", which then led to her being doused with water or otherwise assaulted. "Sock it to me" became a catch-phrase for the show. On one occasion, Richard Nixon, who was running for President in 1968, appeared for a few seconds and asked the question, "Sock it to me?". Some people even credit that brief appearance for handing the very close election to Nixon that year.
  • Los Angeles disc jockey Gary Owens standing with his hand cupped over his ear, giving an announcement.
  • Henry Gibson holding a flower and reading a poem.
  • Scenes of people dancing at a party, including bikini-clad women (notably Goldie Hawn) with jokes written on their bodies.
  • Lily Tomlin as the obnoxious telephone operator "Ernestine" and as a child named "Edith Ann".

    One ringy-dingy!

At the end of the show, Dan Rowan turned to his co-host and said, "It's time to say good-night, Dick", to which Martin replied, "Good-night, Dick" (reprising a bit from the old George Burns and Gracie Allen radio show). The show then featured various cast members opening panels in a psychedelically painted wall and telling short jokes to one another. As the show drew to a close and the general applause died down, the sound of one person clapping continued even as the screen turned blank.

Cast members Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn later became noted film stars. Henry Gibson later starred in the Robert Altman film "Nashville" (which also featured Tomlin). Dave Madden, whose trademark on the show was to throw a handful of confetti while keeping a deadpan expression at the punch line of a joke, later played the role of Reuben Kincaid in the television sitcom The Partridge Family. Richard Dawson, who previously had a regular part in the sitcom Hogan's Heroes, went on to his defining role as host of the US television game show Family Feud.

The show gave considerable publicity to singer Tiny Tim, an unusual looking man with long hair who sang in a falsetto voice while accompanying himself on ukulele, who (thanks to his appearances on the show) achieved a hit single with "Tiptoe Through the Tulips". Tiny Tim was later married on the Tonight Show to a woman known as Miss Vicky.

Besides "sock it to me" and "Good night, Dick", the show featured other popular catch phrases:

    • "And that's the truth" (followed by the Bronx cheer)
    • "Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls"
    • "You bet your Sweet Bippy"
    • "Here Come The Judge!" (reprising a bit first made famous by comedian Pigmeat Markham)
    • "We're the phone company. We don't care. We don't have to."
    • "Was that a chicken joke?"

There was also a Laugh-In Magazine published for about 2 years; it was similar to MAD Magazine.

In 1977 NBC briefly revived the show, less Rowan and Martin and anyone else from the first show. The revival is chiefly notable as Robin Williams' first network show.

    OK, Everybody!

    Sock it to me!

  ~ MILITARY REQUESTS ~

Helping our military!!

If you are interested in helping our military, please FReepmail MoJo2001, Brad's Gramma, or Kathy In Alaska for more information. Below is a brief overview of the help that is needed. Thank you!

Operation Semper Fi - Field Hospital in Iraq needs basic necessities and anything else you can think of.

Operation Iraqi Children - An Active Duty FReeper, smaagee, has requested help for children ages 3-11 in Mosul. If you are interested in helping, please contact us. Make sure to put "Operation Iraqi Children" in the subject line.

Operation Military Families - Many military family members have been affected by the deployments. As with many places in the United States, it has taken quite a toll on the population in general. In Indiana, "close" to 100,000 Active Duty and Reservists have left the State. Many of those family members left behind are having a hard time, if you are interested in helping then contact us.

Donations For Our Troops - If you'd like to help send care packages without having to shop, we've found a reliable FRiend to help you. Please contact patriciaruth in FReepmail. She has been doing this for a long time and would be happy to have the help.

Operation Convoys - Our military folks that are members of those Transportation companies need help with the basic necessities and items to hold them over until they return back to base. We've all heard about roadside bombings. Please help make their life a little easier.

Operation Emails, FReepmail, and SNAIL MAIL - So? You don't have the time or money to send anything, how about an email or snail mail? You can even send a FReepmail. We would be happy to send it forward.

WALTER REED & BETHESDA HOSPITALS - FReeper TruthNtegrity visits our Troops in the hospital as often as possible. She needs some help getting them pre-paid phone cards and something to pass the time by. (Such as games, magazines, etc..). If you are interested in helping, please FReepmail her. Thank you!

Operation Care Packages - If you'd like to bring a smile to any of our brave heroes, send them a little something from home. It will go a long way to lifting their morale. It's a long road to killing all the terrorists. Don't let our brave heroes forget that we care about them. FReepmail us if you'd like to help.

Are you not sure what to send or do?

Today's FEEBLE

YOKE:

A farmer had five female pigs. Times were hard, so he decided to take them to the county fair and sell them. At the fair, he met another farmer who owned five male pigs.

After talking a bit, they decided to mate the pigs and split everything 50/50. The farmers lived sixty miles apart. So they agreed to drive thirty miles each, and find a field in which to let the pigs mate.

The first morning, the farmer with the female pigs got up at 5 a.m., loaded the pigs into the family station wagon, which was the only vehicle he had, and drove the thirty miles.

While the pigs were mating, he asked the other farmer, "How will I know if they are pregnant?" The other farmer replied, "If they're in the grass in the morning, they're pregnant, if they're in the mud, they're not."

The next morning the pigs were rolling in the mud. So he hosed them off, loaded them into the family station wagon again and proceeded to try again. This continued each morning for more than a week.

One morning the farmer was so tired, he couldn't get out of bed. He called to his wife, "Honey, please look outside and tell me whether the pigs are in the mud or in the grass."

"Neither," yelled his wife, "they're in the station wagon and one of them is honking the horn."
