Admin Lecture Series ^ | 7-23-04

Posted on 07/23/2004 6:27:46 PM PDT by Admin Moderator

It's time again for another posting refresher course. Please take a moment to read. Thanks for your cooperation.

Only one of these topics will show up in a sidebar, posting to multiple topics will still only show one topic.

Activism/Chapters - Activism, protests, news and business of Free Republic Chapters. Freep this poll should be placed in vanity. General news stories about activism should be place in news. After action reports from Freeps are allowed here.

Announcements – Notifications of Activism events, FR business

Breaking News - Not every story is breaking news. Breaking news should be news that affects most of us. There are some exceptions. If there is a hot current event happening, check breaking news. Most likely, it's there already, please check first, then use our search function. (explained below)

Editorial - Editorials are opinions. Some vanities, if well written and thought out can be considered editorial material.

Extended News - Extended news is for stories which have been posted previously and have updated or newer information.

Free Republic - This categories is reserved for Free Republic business.

Front Page News - Front page is for stories which are not breaking news, but would be found on the front page of a newspaper.

These are just some of the topics that you may use two or more. Do not go out of your way to put in more topics just to try to get more views for your thread. Doing so makes the topics less usable for everyone. Also, do not list every state on your thread. It is unnecessary. Please limit the state topics to those states that the story pertains to.

Business/Economy - Business, industry, financial, markets, trade, banking, budget, debt, taxes and economy news.

Constitution/Conservatism - Discussion of conservatism and conservative principles and issues.

Crime/Corruption – News and discussion of crime, corruption government abuse, power grabs, and scandal.

Culture/Society - Discussion of health, education, welfare, drugs, abortion, environment, housing, unions, employment, social security, religion, arts, humanity, sports, and other cultural and societal issues.

Foreign Affairs - News and discussion of international politics, foreign affairs, diplomacy, national security, war, military, defense and armed forces issues.

Government - News and discussion of all branches of government, departments, agencies, law, policy, legislation, processes and judiciary.

Miscellaneous - Anything which doesn't fit into another category.

News/Current Events - News and discussion of current events.

Philosophy - Discussions of philosophy and ideology.

Political Humor/Cartoons - Funny stuff

Politics/Elections - Discussions of politics and elections.

Unclassified - Articles awaiting re-classification.

Any State or Country - Do not spam every single state or country, please use only those that pertain to your article.

Vanities and General Interest.

Your Opinion/Questions - All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. This doesn’t mean your one thought is a thread by itself. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest. Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic.

General interest (Chat)

– Is for discussions of news and interest topics unrelated to the news forum. We will move articles unrelated to the news forum here.

Bloggers & Personal

For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it.

Our new Bloggers & Personal forum is for:

Click on the "Bloggers & Personal" forum link on the Forums sidebar of the latest posts pages.

Hopefully, this will become a very popular forum for promoting and or discussing blogs and personal opinion/news/forum pages.

SEARCH

If it's a breaking news topic, check breaking news first, it's probably already posted.

To avoid duplicate posts, please search before posting. The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "Funny Video, This Land", start with 'Land' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two or more keywords, in this case, try 'Jib'. For an effective search, select 'match any words' and select 'order by post time'.

Search Land jib

And lastly, please bookmark this excerpt only list, Jim updates frequently.

Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints

FYI: The New York Times is not on the excerpt list.

It's time again for another posting refresher course. Please take a moment to read.

Thank you.

Oh, and thanks for letting me have a little fun with TheCole-meister before he went bye-bye. Now, do you know what a "very strict Reagan Republican" is? He never answered me. I hate it when that happens. :-)

Another handy link for newbies. Someone should update this one.

Shouldn't that be "FRewbies?"

Don't know. TheCole was an obscure troll (not a popular returnee), he was banned before. Can't answer your question about a 'strict Reagan Republican'. My best guess is, I will never vote for Mondale...

Good luck. Liberals suck.

Y'all ought to give credit to Steve Jackson Games for that blatant rip-off of Illuminati in the AM profile.

It bothers me b/c Free Republic is a campus where we talk, discuss, argue, pontificate, make observations, and hopefully learn from each other. By being quiet the first few months after joining, I got a feel for what works and what's awkward, as well as for which FReepers are credible and which are laughable. Those who start new threads are presenting items to be considered by the rest of us.

It's strange that on one's first day here one presumes to know the lay of the land well enough to post a topic that is suitable, has not been posted already, and won't be an annoyance to seasoned FReepers.

AM, thank you sooo much for posting this. I cannot believe how many people are posting duplicate threads lately. And it is even worse when the thread already is right there in Breaking News and has been there for hours or even a full day. How much effort does it take to do a search before posting a new thread?

And another thing for the posters. There is no reason to type the thread title in all caps. You do not have to yell.

Here is a tip for HTML challenged FReepers.

When posting articles you must format to HTML. A simple way to do this is to cut and paste your article into a standard reply window from any thread. Then choose "spell" option, "apply corrections" and then "Preview."

The Preview will be HTML formatted. Cut and paste the preview into the body of article section of your posting, add your comments and your done.

I understand the mission of FR. What I don't (didn't) understand is if it's OK to post a vanity *in the appropriate place* about my son's computer program, for example. Or are vanities (placed in General Interest/Chat) supposed to be somehow related to FR's mission also? I understand completely (and always have) that they don't belong in any of the news sections. But, can we post anything we'd like in the General Interest category? I'm still not sure. If I'm not mistaken, I think I've gotten in "trouble" or seen others get in trouble for posting vanities in the General Interest section. I do understand the need to conserve bandwidth, so I am not complaining about this. I just want to know what's OK. I'm not a bigtime poster in the first place.

Thank you for helping.

When someone wants to alert another Freeper to a particular thread, he will hit "reply" and type that Freeper's name into the "To:" box. Then, when his friend shows up at FR, he will see "New Posts to You" highlighted at the top of the window and when he clicks on it, he will have a link that takes him to the thread his friend wanted him to see. Does that make sense? Now, sometimes people will type in "ping" because they want to read the article, but don't have the time right then. If they hit "reply" and type in "ping", they will be alerted on their own "Posts to You" page that the article is there to be read.

Now, what is a "bump"? This would make sense if you were set up so that when you come to FR, you immediately go to the "Latest Posts" page. This page, every time it is refreshed, shows the articles that have most recently had posts made to it. So, the articles that are having the most discussion are always at or near the top. If you think an article is really good and should be read, but isn't in Breaking News (or even if it is), you might reply and type in "Bump" so that the people who go to the "Latest Posts" page are likely to see it when they go there.

I hope that some of this was helpful (and correct!) LOL

I guess I have two points to add here.

One, for your first post, I don’t think you can do any better than to post a vanity. In that spirit, I’d like to ask everybody for sunburn remedies.

Number two, be sure to fill out your Freeper profile and include pertinent information. Things like, your real name, phone number, address, map to your house, social security number, internet password, times you’re home and when you’re not, where you work, just the basics so others can get to know you.

Hope that’s helpful.

Whats the rule (is there a rule) on folks who don't post anything except SPAM to promote their own site ? I can understand making comments and maybe a link embedded but just graphics advertising their site and a link to their site on a whole bunch of threads.........??

Stay safe !
