Suppose in the 1992 presidential election, after an unconfirmed rumor surfaced about an alleged affair then President Bush had years earlier, Clinton supporters decided to make marital fidelity a central issue. That would be almost as crazy as the current effort by some Bush backers to focus attention on John Kerry's Vietnam War record and subsequent protests. This is being significantly funded and directed by Texas fat cats and political operatives who have more than a passing relationship with Bush political guru Karl Rove. These are some of the same people who surreptitiously smeared John McCain in the last election. There's a Web site, some vicious TV ads are supposed to start this week, and a man, who was a pawn of the Nixon White House efforts to discredit John Kerry 33 years ago, has written a book attacking Mr. Kerry's Vietnam experiences. The charges are that Sen. Kerry has exaggerated his war record, maligned all Americans soldiers when he later protested against the war, and learned the wrong lessons from Vietnam.

Had G.H.W. Bush made his own marital fidelity one of his key planks while running for president, had G.H.W. Bush dared reporters ala Gary Hart, you bet you life it would have been fully investigated. There is no reason in the world guys who served with Kerry can not now step forward and say he is now or he then padded his military resume.
If Kerry is going to run on his Vietnam record...we have every right to question it.
By the way....McCain is way off base in backing Kerry on this. He is choosing a fellow senator who trashed the military over the vets who fought the war with out asking anything more than respect. McCain is the true Macnhurian candidate. I can't stand him.

This guy's analogy is completely BS. Unlike Clinton, who did in fact cheat on his "wife" and rape other women, Bush has not manufactured war medals for himself or misrepresented his life like Kerry has. It's these kinds of stupid and incorrect arguments that win the minds of America's dumbasses.
John Kerry's Vietnam War record matters because he is the one that keeps bringing it up. Then he cries foul when the truth comes out. Kerry is such a loser.... In November too!
Al Hunt is crazy as hell to make this analogy.
All accounts clearly indicate? What a steaming pile of crap this article is. It's one thing to question the Swiftees questioning Kerry in Vietnam; it is quite another to start spinning his anti-war activity. I'm disgusted by this opinion piece. Who is Al Hunt?

What does Al Hunt have on the publisher of the WSJ that this mediocre dud has keep his writing job all these years? I wouldn't wipe my butt on an Al Hunt column, knowing how flimsy it is.
