United Defense Defeats RPGs with Close-In Counter Measure Active Protection System On Sept. 8, United Defense Industries announced that its Close-In Counter Measure (CICM) active protection system successfully intercepted and destroyed incoming Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) during end-to-end testing at the U.S. Armys Redstone Technical Test Center at Redstone Arsenal, Ala.
In successful end-to-end tests, the United Defense CICM system detected launched RPGs, tracked incoming rockets, launched its countermeasures and defeated RPGs before they reached the protected system.
"This successful counter-RPG mission was accomplished in less than nine months through targeted research and development efforts and rapid prototyping capabilities by United Defense and its teammates to quickly develop a successful, affordable near-term counter to RPGs," said Carl Sullinger, CICM Program Manager. "We expect to offer the CICM system to the U.S. military as a force protection measure for our fighting forces in combat while providing a fully compatible path with active defense suites for future systems."

Quietly manufacture 100,000 RPG rounds that are DESIGNED to detonate when the launcher's trigger is pulled. Then equally quietly put them up for sale in the Kosovo-Syria-Pakistan-Iran-Saudi arms markets. This was done in the Cold War.

Cannoneer has gone off to work in Afghanistan. Bequeathed the ping list to me a couple weeks ago on the Tuesday Foxhole Treadhead thread, his other armor ping list he left for Darksheare.
He should have internet access by 9/18 or soon after and perhaps he will get a post in on FR somewhere. :-)
We pray for his safety.

The Russians and the US gave them out like they were candy back during the Cold War. They have a long shelf life, require little maintainance, and are cheap as hell to buy on the Black Market. In short: The Knuckleheads aren't going to run out anytime soon.

BANG, are you guys on the treadhead list? I didn't notice your names on the original list typed up by Cannoneer no. 4. I must have been added after he typed up the original.

FWIW tomorrow morning I am setting in on an armor lessons learned in Iraq seminar. I will post some information out of it sometime in the next few days. The briefing is unclassified, but I will not post anything that could be used by the rag heads.

RPG-7 Penetration Armor= 330 mm
Muzzle Velocity = 140(m/s)
mass= 4.4lb
ergo 4.4 x v = 2020 ftlbs.
-------------------------------------------
water cannon:
velocity at muzzle =120 m/sec
min/max agent per impulse shot = 3.0 / 12.0 liter
12 liter mass = 25lbs
25 lbs. x v ft/sec = 9840 ft/lb.
at 9840 ft/lb for water cannon vs 2020 ft/lb for rpg's, with sound beamforming targeting, could deflect or stop rpg's?

Understand........ I'm just wondering if this uses projectiles in a claymore fashion then I'd hate for it to miss me and the APC behind me "detected" it before I could duck twice per se...... or was near an APC conducting overwatch mission for door kickers and alley apes.....
Stay safe !

Yep, there's something about projectiles fired automatically, while I might be in front of them! Still, good to see the R&D.

That was done with hand grenades in Viet Nam. Worked about four times then just turned into booby traps.
