Assault weapons/An important ban expires
Minneapolis Red Star ^ | September 13, 2004

Over the last decade, buying an assault weapon hasn't been as easy as it once was. For that you can credit Congress, which decided in 1994 that rapid-fire killing machines have no proper place in American life. Apparently that conclusion has been renounced, for assault weapons are even now rushing back into gun shops. Today marks the expiration of the ban -- and the coming of a great shopping opportunity for gunsters. Never mind that most Americans strongly backed the ban. Somehow, the prohibition was allowed to wither without regard for the public will -- and despite past support from major-party presidential candidates. Last March, Sen. John Kerry voted for renewing the ban, which cleared the Senate but died in the House.

Once again, the Red Star trots out it's self righteous rhetoric, using the scare tactics of the Brady Bunch.

I'm not a gun sort of guy, but I wonder while reading these articles exactly how often these "weapons" were used during a crime. The media make it sound as though it was the criminals choice of weapon pre 1994.

It's not really self righteous rhetoric nor is it just a scare tactic. Rather (hey, there's that guy's name again), it's a plain and simple lie.

Assault weapons were banned in the United States since the days of John Dillinger ~ the 1930s.

If a weapon does not have an automatic firing characteristic, it's not an assault weapon. Anyway, that was the standard the Minneapolis Star's Nazi puppet masters decided 60 years ago when they devised the term ~ a light field weapon suitible for Infantry use that has auto fire ~ no real American should even use the terms "assault weapon" or "assault rifle" anyway.

We should stick to our own term ~ "automatic", or maybe even "rock and roll".

What BS

These weapons and they are NOT Assault Weapons in terms of todays military parlance since are INCAPABLE of automatic fire ( Machine gun) were NOT BANNED
You buy as many as you wanted for the last TEN years with cosmetic changes so in essence they were NOT banned

You could even get the 30 rd mags if they were 10 years old

Its insane to let people have AK 47's. What in the world is the purpose for that? Some nut is going to get hold of one and there will be some crazy shooting like Columbine.

Amendment II

"...shall not be infringed."

What part of "shall not" do they not understand?

"Last March, Sen. John Kerry voted for renewing the ban, which cleared the Senate but died in the House."

I am shocked that Kerry showed up for a vote.

I guess voting to infringe gun owner's rights is more important than showing up for intelligence committee meetings or reading intellugence reports.

I saw a study a year ago that said that these types of weapons were involved in less than 3% of violent crimes. Some states have never recorded ANY felonies that were committed with "Assault Weapons". They are not the weapon of choice for most criminals because they're expensive and difficult to conceal.

Had you been one of those Korean shopowners in LA during the riots, you'd certainly be happy to own one.

I should had in todays terrorist atmosphere there should be some checks put in place to prevent terrorists infiltrators from simply walking in and buying ANY KIND OF GUN

I know we have INSTANT CHECK BUT is any proof of citizenship etc required ??

We have metal detectors at airports etc etc so requiring some kind of proof in this atmosphere for purchase of guns is not unrealistic ( not sure what the current requirements are )

I know I know terrorists can smuggle guns in BUT why make it easier

In addition if they take over a school and use weapons they bought here the fallout will be UNBELIEVABLE against the NRA gun owners etc etc

That's odd. I bought an AR a couple of years ago. It didn't seem particularly hard. Didn't have a flash hider or a lug, but I guess it was still a "rapid-fire killing machine". Is it possible that the Red Star's Editorial Board is ignorant? Deliberately misleading? Both?

Go back and read crime statistics.....AK47's are NOT the weapon of choice.

Prepare to don asbestos underwear. You might wish to do some research before posting on the topic. (To start with, research Columbine and come back when you've determined what firearm most students were killed with).
