XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN OCT 03, 2004 14:05:38 ET XXXXX

DEBATE MYSTERY: DID KERRY HAVE CHEAT SHEET?

Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:

"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."

So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?

What did Kerry place on the podium?

Video replays of the Kerry maneuver played all weekend long on the internet.

[A tight zoom of the Boston.Com feed shows Kerry pulling a mysterious "card" from his jacket. 14 seconds into video, after commerical]

A top Kerry campaign source explained to the DRUDGE REPORT late Sunday how Bush supporters were once again trying to distract.

"Kerry did not cheat," said the Kerry insider. "This is more lies from Republicans, who are hoping for a quick change of subject away from the president's performance, and the new polls."

Yikes, bad enough to see kerry dressed, dyed, oranged, and manicured.

I'm usually not given to conspiratorial thinking but, dammit, after the CBS document brouhaha, I'm becoming ready to believe almost anything.
I'm beginning to believe the debate was rigged. Someone from the inside had Kerry prepped on all the questions, he had his talking points ready on a cheat sheet, and he was coached to use Jim Lehrer's already sympathetic attitude to his best advantage. I'm also inclined to believe that the people who framed the questions and ran the debate did their best to give Kerry an edge.
Yeah, Bush should have been better prepared. But he was justifiably angry. The poor schmuck, even his understandable disgust is being used against him.

I think it looks very fishy. But it could be a trick. He's a bit too blatant about it, perhaps he's hoping to stir up just such a reaction by the PJ Brigade and it will turn out to be something totally harmless and make everyone look bad. Could have been a folded hankie, don't know if that's legit or not. Seeing as how he sweats so much and all. Waiting for higher resolution tape.

we can only hope that Fox is scurrying around in their archives looking for these frames at this very moment - I emailed The Corner to ask them to comment on it.

Fox always has good looking footage. If you switch between channels during live events and news conferences when all the news networks are filming the same thing simultaneously, there are stark differences in the video quality. I would guess that this bodes well for Fox having high-quality video archives.

The interesting thing from the Dem response is that they don't deny it at all. They just call it "distracting". An answer in itself?

if you look at the one posted at the link with the commerical, you see Kerry glance down at whatever it is he has right away, as if refreshing his mind.....

I can just hear Terry Mcaulif telling a gathering of dodocrats, "Are you going to believe your own eyes or what we tell you"? Amazing, simply amazing.

I've been following your resistance to the facts of this story. I was wondering myself what part of "NO NOTECARDS" you were having difficulty with.

Did anyone notice at the beginning of the debate, when Bush was speaking, Kerry was making like he was writing things down - but he was doing this with what I saw at the time as strange exaggerated arm movements?

Yes, I saw that. Kerry was also grinning thru clenched teeth, it seemed to me. I recall thinking he looked like *gotcha*. But the entire sequence was exaggerated and odd. He was writing w/too much flourish.

If Bush saw this what could he do? Make an international incident on live TV? No he was disgusted. Notice that the usually friendly Bush did NOT shake Lehrer's hand afterward. Notice how he got off the stage quickly.

If a team cheats near the start of a game and the other team notices it, it can be very difficult to call attention to the cheating without it being perceived as an admission that one wasn't certain one can win.

If a team manages a narrow victory, and then after the game can show that they managed their victory despite the other team's cheating, that's what will really cement their performance.

In the immediate afterglow of the debates, Kerry came off ahead. But I think that will fade if people ask themselves "What is Kerry's Iraq policy anyway?". If people's opinion of Kerry starts to falter a little bit and then they discover that he cheated, their opinion is going to plummet far more than if they'd been aware of the cheating from the get-go.

I think Bush saw him pull out the notes, and then when he realized that Kerry had the answers to the questions already, well George is not stupid.

This is an important story that cannot be allowed to be swept under the rug.

The Dems need to address what's visible in the video.

Nobody in the audience could have seen his reach into his pocket. He intended that, of course.

But the video is there. He probably didn't know there was a camera there.

We are talking an order of magnitude difference in resolution (never mind clarity) compared to the footage that everyone has had access to so far.

Think "Superbowl Half-Time Show".

We still have the 'net and Fox News Channel to get the word out. Word gets around. We don't need the MSM.
