DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- An English teacher and cheerleading coach in Douglas County has been suspended without pay after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage male student.

Authorities say they suspended the teacher identified as 27-year-old Kari McCarley at Alexander High School last week after another teacher overheard the boy talking about a relationship with McCarley.

McCarley was released from jail on bond.

"As usual, another light thread degrades into a moral litmus test."

A light thread, eh? When a similar thread appears on FR, but with a male teacher and a female student, or with a male teacher and a male student it's not a light thread. Why is that, do you think?

You do approve of this boy having sex with his teacher, don't you?

I'm not sure I understand your post.

My whole point was that you SHOULDN'T take what is being said too seriously because it is being said 'tongue in cheek' based on past experiences. How did my pointing that out 'cause you to take this conversation seriously'?

The whole thrust of my original post in a nutshell:
Do the posters on this forum believe that teachers be having sex with students? NOOOOOO it is wrong!!!

Do 9-12 graders fantasize about it from time to time? YES!!! (except for me because of the whole hairy wart thing)

Were the posters mimicking locker room talk, based on their understanding (through life experience) of what many 9-12 graders wish would happen? YES!! IT WAS SILLYNESS! I'm sorry if you can't recognize it that way.

We ARE adults capable of recognizing right from wrong. Sorry if all the "wink-wink" talk threw you for a loop.

Two words: double standard.

If this were a male teacher, regardless of the gender of the student, this thread would be filled with people one-upping one another for the most painful torture methods that should be employed over a period of years to punish the offender.

If you took the time to read the thread, you would see that my first post pointed out that double-standard.

You would also see my opinion that this teacher belongs in jail.

"Boy, you are a troll."

Nope. You're the one who said this was a "light" thread. I don't see teacher/student sex as a light subject. Am I wrong in that?

My question remains the same: Would your attitude be the same if it was a male teacher and a female or even a male student? Your answer to that question answers my question about your approval of this particular situation.

I saw and applauded your #22. The problem is that it doesn't tend to reconcile with your statement at the end of #60. Assuming we can both agree (assuming the charges are true) that the teacher was in the wrong, the teacher abused her power in the professional relationship of teacher/student, the teacher should be fired for that abuse, and that she should be prosecuted if she violated local consent laws, then we're in agreement on the issue.

Is everything ok in r9etb land?

eh... Some good, some bad. Part of my peevishness is that I understand the strong temptations that accompany the other side of the issue.

The part of your posts I'm objecting to is where you're talking about the boy's "living the fantasy of many boys his age."

That's true enough -- but it also sharpens the discussion of what I find offensive in that attitude.

Let's consider the situation from the perspective of the horny 16-yo boy. Are his actions right and proper?

There are two ways to look at it. If the boy is capable of making his own decisions, then by his actions he has helped to break up the woman's family. In which case he is in the wrong.

In a more general case, if our "responsible boy" has sex with an unmarried teacher, he is still in the wrong, because fornication is wrong.

And if the boy is too young to make good decisions -- and he's therefore not responsible for his actions -- then it is in fact "abuse" on the part of the teacher, to lead him into actions we both acknowledge to be wrong.

"Boyhood fantasies" are all very real, and very attractive. But at at the same time, the hormone-driven fantasies of young boys have never been known to discriminate well between what's right and wrong. That's why we, as adult men, should not put ourselves in the position of giving boys an added incentive to something we know to be wrong.

Not necessarily. Some wrong things are more wrong than others.

it would be rare for a teenager to go around blatently lying about sexual acts.

You're kidding, right?

Your "wink wink" talk didn't throw me for a loop sir, and please don't paint me as some kind of prude.

I was simply pointing out that YOU are no longer in the 9th grade - 12th grade. Unlike some teenagers, YOU are supposed to recognize what is right and what is wrong. If I were the mother of this teenage boy, I'd be pretty ticked off at your cavalier attitude towards this whole situation.

BTW...."wink wink" if this were a HOT male teacher and a sixteen year old girl, you and I wouldn't even be having this conversation....would we?
