Being George Steinbrenner

Biggest choke in sports history by the team with the biggest payroll in the biggest rivalry in sports. Needless to say it's a safe bet that George Steinbrenner is well on his way to insanity. Page 2 looks inside Steinbrenner's head to find out just how far along he is:

Torre has too much class and self respect to tolerate that crap.

Angelos of the Orioles is an idiot. He has put bad people into the front office and spent his money follishly. Toronto is playing MoneyBall and we will see them reemerge in a few years. Tampa is chronically pathetic...

Yeah, you're probably right about that. He is a good guy, and I do hope he does well, wherever he ends up.

Absolutely. I think the Yankees have been to WS 22 times? Whatever it is, they've been there enough and I'd like to see someone new in it. (I felt the same way about the Bulls year after year after boring year).

Go Astros! And if the Astros don't make it, then go Cards!

One of the reasons people dislike the Yankees, and even more so, their fans, is because of their tendency to "remind" everyone of their past success.

Well, yes that and having the riot police go onto the field because they cannot act civilized. Sheesh, after that display I'm not surprised NY is a democrat stronghold!

>>>>Not likely....

What's not likely? That the Yanks are done?! LOL

>>>>They won in the 90's with home grown talent.

It was a mix of home grown talent and stars. The success of the Yanks has spread throughout baseball. All the successful teams have tried to copy the Yankees for years. Some have done it right. Some haven't. But the fact remains. The Yanks management, front office and scouting operations, are the best in MLBB. This year on the field, the Yanks were stopped by a better team. Boston won fair and square. Congrats to the Red Sox.

But the Yanks aren't stuck with anyone. A healthy Giambi will be back in the lineup next year and there are no plans to trade any of the big name stars at this point. Although, if Kevin Brown doesn't stay healthy, he could be gone. The starting pitching wasn't up to championship standards this year. That will change next year.

Frankly, I think you hate the Yanks and thats too bad.

Typical rhetoric from another Yankee hater. How can anyone overlook the success of the NY Yankees? Its reality. Just like the Raiders and the Cowboys. Year in and year out, the Yanks have been one of the very best teams in baseball.

>>>>But that's what you get when you spend $190 million on a bunch of all-stars who are far more interested in their own incomes, careers, and images, than they are in being part of a team.

That's silly. A-Rod and Sheffield came to the Yanks to win a championship. Both players are known for their unselfish desire to win!

What you don't seem to understand is that the Yankees success over the years ADDS to the perception of them choking like no other. They are, as you wrote, the most successful franchise in baseball, been in a string of post season appearances, with the highest payroll in the game, at home, after leading the series 3-0, against the same team they beat in the seventh game last year, AND STILL MANAGED TO COLLAPSE LIKE NO OTHER TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL!!!!!!!!!

Giambi is heading downhill and yes, they are stuck with some huge contracts. The core of that team, Posada, Williams, Jeter, Petite, Rivera weren't bought players. They were scouted well and developed. key players like O'Neil, Knobloch, Nelson, Stanton were acquired but with smart thinking. Matsui has been great but A-Rod was a dumb move just to spite the Sox and Brown was also a desperation move.

Cashmen is great but steinbrenner is his own worst enemy and the team will be paying that bill for years to come. He is repeating his mistakes from the 80's all over again.

The Yankees will be back

So they got the flu. It will make them appreciate their health all the more when they get better.

Didn't the Red Sox only get in the playoffs in the first place because of the damned wild card?

Paying those two pitchers last night $15million apiece per year tells me someone is crazy.

>>>>What you don't seem to understand ...

I understand. I understand that people like you hate the Yanks and you're happy they lost. So be it. LOL But the Yanks will be back next season. When you've been in the post season as much as the Yankees have been --- 26 WS Championships & 39 AL Pennants --- there's a good chance that you'll be involved in some losses. Even some historic losses. This time the Yanks came out on the short end. But when you're one of the best organizations around, you take your lumps and come back better and stronger.

Giambi was injured the last two seasons. He'll be back and he'll make a difference next year. And if you want good players on your team, you have to pay the price. In NYCity, that means paying extra to get the best talent around.

>>>>The core of that team, Posada, Williams, Jeter, Petite, Rivera weren't bought players.

You're preaching to the choir.

Like I said, what hurt the Yanks this season, especially in the playoffs was startring pitching. The Yanks will get two quality starters for next season and maybe try to fill secondbase with a higher caliber player then Cairo. If they get Beltran for CF, Bernie will go DH full time.

The Yanks will be fine.

Joe Torre has won not 3 but 4 World Series for the Yankees...1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000

Yes! But wildcard teams count. Don't forget, Boston won 98 games this year. Third most in MLBB.

Kinda hoping Steinbrenner fires Torre, but it's not gonna happen. My team, the Mariners, is looking for a manager. I'm still mourning Piniella.
